Ozone Contact Water V5 Review: Minimalism as a Principle

The manufacturer describes this bar in one line: "nothing surplus — only what you need to ride confidently". In a category where the habit is to add features, that claim deserves a serious look.

Click-In Loop: the critical component

The quick release is the one part of a bar that governs safety rather than comfort. Here is why the requirements are what they are.

The moment you need it always looks the same: the kite is pulling, you are not in control, your hands are busy, there is no time. So the release must fire under full load, with one hand, without aiming.

And the half of the job people forget: you have to reassemble the loop on the water. A system that releases beautifully but needs two hands and ten minutes to rebuild ends the session every time it fires.

The Click-In Loop addresses exactly that second half: the loop clicks back in, one-handed. The practical effect is that people stop being afraid to use the release. And a release you are afraid to use does not work at all.

Two lengths: choosing

Bar length follows kite size. It is not a matter of preference.

38 cm — less leverage. The kite turns more slowly, control is more precise, your arms work less. For kites up to roughly 9 m and for shorter riders.

45 cm — more leverage. A big kite turns willingly. For 9 to 13 m and above.

What happens if you get it wrong. A long bar on a small kite makes steering sharp: the smallest input throws the kite across and it feels nervous. A short bar on a big kite does the opposite — the kite does not want to turn, and you work your arms instead of the kite.

For very small kites and shorter riders Ozone offers the separate Compact V5 with a short throw.

25 metre lines: why that length

Both versions ship on 25 m lines — the standard for water freeride, and worth understanding.

Longer lines lengthen the kite's path through the power zone and place it in stronger air higher above the water. More pull, higher jumps, better light-wind performance.

Shorter lines give faster response: bar input reaches the kite with almost no lag. Which is why racing kites like the R1 V5 fly on 11 to 14 m.

Twenty-five metres is the compromise most water disciplines settle on.

Why simplicity is a virtue here

A bar lives in sand and salt water, gets dropped on the beach and stood on. Every extra mechanism in those conditions is one more thing to fail.

The second argument is you. A bar has to work not when you are calm but when you are frightened. A feature you have to remember does not exist in that moment.

Hence Ozone's logic: trim, release, line untwist — and that is all. Nothing that needs separate thought.

Who it suits

• Line lengths. Rears stretch more than fronts; more than a couple of centimetres out changes how the kite flies.
• Wear at knots and loops. That is almost always where a line fails.
• Trim travel. A sand-packed trim system jams under load.
• The release. It should fire easily. If it is stiff, do not go out.

Common questions

Which length if I own two kites?

Go by the larger one if they are within three or four metres. With a wider spread, two bars make more sense.

Will it work with another brand's kite?

Formally yes, if it is four-line. But factory trim differs between brands, and the kite may not behave as intended.

Can I shorten the lines?

With extension and shortening sets, yes. Changing lengths arbitrarily and breaking the front-to-rear proportion, no.

How does the Contact differ from the Compact?
