The engine size trap

Since 1 January 2025 the A1 category in Vietnam covers motorcycles up to 125cc — it used to be 175cc. So an A1 endorsement legally covers the Vision, Air Blade and Scoopy, while the PCX, Vario, NVX, ADV, Aprilia and XMAX all require a full A. If your permit says A1 only, take one of the first three rows in the table: you stay legal and your insurance stays valid.

What documents you need

Short version: Vietnam requires both your national licence and an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Neither works on its own.

1968 Convention countries

Carry your national licence together with the 1968-style IDP booklet. Most of Europe, Russia and many Asian countries issue this format, and Vietnam recognises it. Both documents must be on you — the booklet alone is not valid.

USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand

Your IDP is issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which Vietnam does not recognise. Legally you count as having no licence at all. The options are a Vietnamese licence or a bike with a driver.

The category matters

Your IDP must carry a motorcycle category — A, A1 or A2. A permit endorsed for cars only (B) does not cover a scooter.

At handover

We photograph your passport and licence when handing over the bike; the originals stay with you. Nobody should ever hold your passport as a deposit — it's your entry document.

What riding unlicensed costs

Delivery and deposit

Mui Ne and Ham Tien

50,000 ₫ — we bring the bike to your hotel or villa and collect it there when the rental ends.

Phan Thiet

150,000 ₫ — including the seafront and the city centre.

Airport and other towns

Priced by distance — send the address and we'll quote before you book.

Deposit

By agreement: usually a cash sum or a document copy, never your original passport. The amount depends on the model and the rental length.

FAQ

Can I rent without a licence?

We don't hand over a bike without a valid licence of the right category. That's not caution for its own sake: fines multiplied in 2025, the bike gets impounded, and your insurance is void in a crash. If you have no licence, we'll arrange a bike with a driver or a taxi.

Do I really need an International Driving Permit?

Yes, alongside your national licence. A national licence alone isn't valid in Vietnam, and an IDP alone isn't either.

How much is the deposit?

By agreement — usually a cash sum depending on the model and duration. We never take your original passport.

What if the bike breaks down?

Call us. We work with several rental shops in Mui Ne, so a replacement bike is usually there quickly.

What if I damage it?

Minor scratches covered by the handover photos are normally not charged. Serious damage is assessed on the spot — which is exactly why we photograph the bike from every side at handover, protecting both you and the shop.

Can I ride to Da Lat or Nha Trang?

Tell us in advance: not every shop allows long trips, and mountain roads need more than a 110cc scooter. We'll pick a suitable bike and warn you about the passes.
