Over three months we covered each discipline separately. Here they are as one map — so you can choose by conditions and budget rather than by name.
Disciplines by wind requirement

Kitesurfing on a twintip. Entry from 1,500 €. Learning: several days. Full breakdown.

Windfoiling. A board from 1,899 €. The guide.
No wind needed at all

By learning barrier — easiest to hardest
- SUP. An hour.
- Surfskate. A couple of days.
- Windsurfing (sailing straight). One lesson.
- Surfing (standing in whitewater). One or two lessons.
- Wing foiling. Several lessons to first flights.
- Kitesurfing. Several days to riding independently.
- Kite foiling. After confident kiting.
- Windfoiling. After confident planing.
- Prone foiling. After confident foiling.
- Pump foiling. After confident foiling, plus fitness.
- Downwind. The hardest: foiling, pumping and an ocean.
By entry budget
Under 500 €: a SUP kit, a surfskate, a bodyboard.
500 to 1,500 €: surfing on a softboard, a mid-range SUP, a foil for kites you own.
1,500 to 3,000 €: kitesurfing from scratch, wing foiling from scratch, windsurfing.
3,000 € and up: downwind, electric assist, premium setups.
An important caveat: that is entry, not the total. In any discipline a second item appears within a season — a second size, a second wing, a second board.
Matching a discipline to your conditions
A strong-wind spot → kiting or windsurfing.
A light-wind spot → foiling, in any form.
A lake with no wind or waves → SUP, pumping, assist.
An ocean with swell → surfing, prone foiling, downwind.
A tight spot → windsurfing or winging: no lines and no safety zone needed.
Shallow water → SUP or surfing; foiling needs depth.
With family → SUP, then surfing.
Short on time → winging: quick to rig, quick to learn.
Logical pathways between disciplines
A thought worth holding at your first purchase: disciplines connect, and equipment partly carries over.
Kiting → kite foiling. Kites, bar and harness stay; a foil and board are added.
Winging → prone → downwind. The foil carries over entirely; the board changes.
Windsurfing → windfoiling. Sail and mast stay.
SUP → SUP windsurfing. The board stays; a sail from 469 € is added.
Surfing → prone foiling. Wave-reading skill transfers completely.
The practical conclusion: when choosing a first discipline, look at where you can grow without replacing everything.
What every discipline needs
- Sun protection — a UPF 50+ rash guard.
- Vest and helmet — mandatory in anything involving a foil.
- A leash — in SUP and surfing.
- Lessons. Two days with an instructor save a month.
- Equipment care — rule eight.
Common questions
Which discipline should a complete beginner start with?
SUP: an hour to learn and kits from 99 €. Then surfing or winging depending on conditions.
Which discipline is hardest?
Downwind foiling: it needs confident foiling, pumping skill and ocean swell.
What if my spot has light wind?
Foiling in any form: it goes from 10 to 12 knots where a twintip needs 15 and up.
Which disciplines need no wind at all?
SUP, surfing (waves needed), pump foiling, tow foiling, electric assist, and surfskating on land.
Does equipment carry between disciplines?
Partly: a foil carries across every foil branch, kites and harness from kiting to kite foiling, a sail from windsurfing to windfoiling.
Where to start
Lessons in Mui Ne, rental, and the equipment catalogue.
Try kitesurfing in Mui Ne
