The R1 V5 is a race-course weapon and nothing else. Ozone spent a full four-year cycle and more than 50 prototypes on it, and the brief was to drop every trace of freeride character. What remains is a kite designed for the highest speeds at very aggressive riding angles and for tacks and gybes that lose as little momentum as possible — the places where races are won and lost.
The design deliberately keeps overhead lift low. Ozone describes the behaviour this way: the faster you ride, the more the kite wants to go upwind, and the lighter and easier it feels as it does. Finding a locked-in race position is meant to be intuitive, with room to play with angle or speed depending on your tactics.
The construction explains the price. Ultra Light materials make the kite inflate quicker and react faster. Plastic battens hold the leading-edge profile, and Rigifoil battens sewn between them stop the cloth denting between the ribs, so the leading edge is as clean as one with twice as many ribs. On the 10m to 21m sizes fibreglass chord battens hold the profile across the chord. Mini ribs in each trailing-edge cell reduce ballooning, and the bridles are low-drag Technora.
Who it is not for. Ozone rates the R1 V5 for advanced and expert riders only, and it is not a freeride kite with a race badge. If you want race-kite power for jumping and recreational foiling, the Mach1 is the user-friendly version. If you are entering IKA youth racing, the class kite is the inflatable Edge Race.
