Ozone Zephyr V8 Ultra-X Kite

The Zephyr is the kite you rig when everyone else is sitting on the beach. For the V8 Ultra-X, Ozone did not just tweak a smooth design; they stripped the airframe back and rebuilt it with one goal — make light-wind riding easier, more fun and possible more often, whatever board you ride.

Lighter is the headline. The Ultra-X material package takes 17% off the weight of this 17m kite. The canopy is Teijin TechnoForce double rip-stop, and the leading edge and struts use 125 g performance Dacron that is 20% lighter and stiffer than conventional Dacron. In light wind that weight saving decides whether the kite flies or falls out of the sky: the V8 delivers more forward drive and faster response in even lighter breezes, and gives you more comfort at the top of its range too.

The shape got cleaner as well. The Continuous Curve Leading Edge — seen first on the Enduro V4 and Alpha V2 — is built from curved segments that form a smooth arc from tip to tip instead of straight tubes joined at angles. Combined with transverse sail shaping, the canopy stays more taut across its whole profile, and the handling feels sportier than a big kite has any right to. Like every Ozone inflatable it flies on a 4-line pulley-less system with sheathed Dyneema bridles.

Who it is not for. A 17m kite is a light-wind specialist. If your spot blows steady 15–25 knots, as Mui Ne does through most of the season, a 17m will be overpowered most days; you will get more use from a 9m and 12m pair. It is also a lot of kite for a heavy-handed beginner in gusty conditions.
