We have covered kite foiling, wing foiling, windfoiling, prone, downwind and pumping. Here they are as one route — from a first session to the disciplines nobody enters without a base.
Why the order matters
Foil disciplines differ not in the difficulty of flying but in the difficulty of starting. Flight is much the same everywhere; what differs is how you accelerate to takeoff.
- Kite and wing: thrust is external and continuous. You can accelerate as long as you like.
- Windfoil: thrust exists, but you must handle a sail at the same time.
- Prone: two or three seconds on a wave, and that is it.
- Downwind: paddling a narrow board up to speed with no thrust at all.
- Pumping: no thrust whatsoever; you accelerate yourself.
Hence the route: start where thrust is external and move towards where there is none.
Stage 1: a first discipline
If you kite → kite foiling. You already fly a kite; you only have to learn to stand on an unstable board. Setup: a foil for the kite you own.
If starting from zero → wing foiling. A wing is simpler than a kite: no lines, no window, no launch. The comparison is in our separate article.
If you windsurf → windfoiling, but confident planing first.
What to buy: a large front wing, a 70 to 75 cm aluminium mast, a Standard fuselage, and a board with 20 to 30 litres above your weight.
How long: first steady flights in a few lessons. Confident turns take a season.
Stage 2: tuning instead of buying
The stage people skip most often, and the best value of all.
Once you can fly, do not rush to change wings. First:
- Play with rear wing shim angle — free, and it changes character: how.
- Try a different fuselage — from
Half of all "I need a different wing" requests are resolved at this stage.
Stage 3: a second wing
The sign it is time: you lack speed, or the wing feels like it is holding you back on acceleration.
What to buy: a front wing 20 to 30 % smaller in area, from the same family. Do not change aspect at the same time — you will not know what actually changed.
What stays: mast, fuselage, board. That is the point of modularity — covered here.
How long: usually the end of a first season.
Stage 4: pumping
Not a separate hobby but a skill that unlocks everything else.
Why: sustaining speed by pumping saves you when the wave runs out or the gust dies. Without it, prone and downwind do not work.
How to learn: inside wing foiling — release the wing for a second or two and hold on by pumping. The time grows from there.
A dedicated board is not needed immediately: pump boards are for people already in the discipline.
Stage 5: a second discipline
Prone — if you have waves. The most surf-like branch: the guide.
Downwind — if you have an ocean and can pump: the guide.
Pumping as your main thing — if you have no conditions at all.
What to buy: its own wing and board for each, though mast and fuselage usually carry over.
How long: a second season.
What not to do
Do not start with downwind. There the start is harder than the flying.
Do not buy a small wing at the start. The discipline's most expensive mistake.
Do not buy a carbon mast first. A thousand euros into a response you will feel in year three.
Do not assemble a foil from parts without experience. Buy the first one complete.
Do not learn at a busy spot. And that is not about politeness: foil etiquette.
What you need at every stage
Helmet and vest. From day one to the last.
Depth of a metre and a half. A 70 to 90 cm mast plus margin.
Foil maintenance. Rinsing and greasing threads — or within a season you will not be able to take the setup apart: why.
Lessons. Two days with an instructor save a month and one broken fuselage.
Budget by stage
Stage 1: 1,200 to 1,800 € — complete foil, board, safety gear.
Stage 2: 0 to 200 € — tuning and pads.
Stage 3: 400 to 900 € — a second wing.
Stage 5: 1,000 to 2,000 € — a board for the new discipline.
The full breakdown is in our budget article.
Common questions
Which discipline should I start with?
One with external thrust: kite foiling if you kite, wing foiling from zero, windfoiling if you windsurf.
When should I buy a second wing?
When you lack speed. Usually the end of a first season — same family, smaller area.
Why learn pumping?
It is the skill prone and downwind depend on: it carries you when the wave runs out.
How long until confident flight?
First flights in a few lessons, confident turns in a season, a second discipline in a second season.
What should I buy first?
A large front wing, a 70 to 75 cm aluminium mast, and a board 20 to 30 litres above your weight. And a helmet.
