What "Semi Complete" means

The name is more honest than it looks: a complete foil without a board. Mast, fuselage, front and rear wing — everything you need to fly. Only the thing you stand on is missing.

Why that is sensible. The board is the most individual part of the package. It depends on your weight, your level and whether you are starting or already flying. Bundling it means imposing a choice.

The mast and wings, by contrast, are standardised — chosen by area and length rather than taste.

The practical upside: you may already own a suitable board. Many people start on a big school board or an old surfboard with foil inserts, in which case paying for a bundled board is pointless.

Three areas: how to choose

This is the substance of the purchase, and the logic is the reverse of kites.

980 cm² for beginners. A large area lifts at low speed, so takeoff comes earlier and mistakes are forgiven. Flight is slower and steadier.

810 cm² in the middle. A compromise: takeoff still early, speed already decent. A sensible second-season choice.

650 cm² for confident riders. Later takeoff, higher speed, sharper response. For those already flying and limited by speed.

The classic beginner mistake is buying the small wing. The logic of "smaller means faster and cooler" works against you here: you will spend six months unable to take off.

The rule: buy big. When you outgrow it, buy a smaller wing for the same mast — cheaper than buying a whole foil again.

Modularity: the main advantage

An important point, and the reason foils are built the way they are.

Wings swap on one fuselage. Progression in foiling means changing the front wing rather than the whole package.

What that means for your wallet: buying 980 cm² today is not money thrown away. A year later you add an 810 or a 650 while the mast, fuselage and rear wing stay.

What board you need

Since the board is not included, here is what to look for.

Volume. A beginner needs buoyancy to spare in order to stand before takeoff. A guide: volume in litres no lower than your weight in kilograms, preferably more.

Foil inserts. Not every board has them, and you cannot simply bolt a foil to an ordinary twintip — mast loads will tear the mounting out.

Size. A big board is easier at first and gets in the way later. That is a normal path: a first foil board is almost always temporary.

A foil is a metal wing on a metre-long mast underwater, and it is sharp.

Helmet and impact vest are not optional. Falling onto the foil is the discipline's most common injury, and it is not about bruises.

Fall sideways, not backwards. That is taught in the first hour, and it is the first thing to drill before you fly.

Keep your distance. A foil travels fast and quietly, and on the water people hear you less than you think.
