Description
The KSR is Kelly Slater's heavily raked template. Rake is how far the fin tip reaches back beyond its base, and it directly determines the board's character.
More rake means drive and a long, drawn-out arc: the fin holds water longer and lets you carry the board through a wide line. The trade is that a short, snappy turn is harder to make on it.
The KSR is the complementary opposite of the KS1 pivot template. That one turns on a point, this one pulls along a line. They were designed as a pair for different conditions and styles.
Slater's own advice: he rides size Large in smaller waves and Medium in bigger ones. The logic runs counter to intuition — in bigger surf the board makes its own speed, and extra fin area gets in the way.
Who it isn't for. Anyone surfing short, sharp turns in the pocket — that wants a pivot template. And check your box system: single-tab variants aren't compatible with everything.
