Ozone brand review: their own factory, versions instead of model years, and foil kites

Ozone builds kites differently from most of the industry. No model years, no contract factory in someone else's country, no habit of repainting last season's kite. Instead: their own factory in Vietnam, version numbers instead of a calendar, and a range where foil kites take up as much space as inflatables.

We are an Ozone dealer and ride their gear in Mui Ne and on snow in the Arctic. Here is the brand in full: what makes it different, which model is for whom, and where it loses to the competition.

The short version

• Their own factory. Ozone manufactures in its own plant in Vietnam rather than placing orders with a shared contractor. That is where the quality control and the one-off custom programme come from.
• Versions, not years. An update ships when there is a real gain, not because September arrived. Last year's Ozone is a previous revision, not obsolete stock.
• Paragliding roots. The company came from paragliding, and it shows in the foil kites: Explore, Hyperlink, Zephyr, Alpha — a range nobody else offers at this depth.
• Ultra-X. A lighter, stronger cloth used on the top versions: same kite, noticeably lighter in the air and in the bag.
• Custom from a single unit. Your colours and logo on a production model, quoted within five working days.

Where the brand came from

Ozone started with paragliders, and that is not trivia — it explains half the range. By the time the company entered kiting it already had years of experience with soft wings that contain no inflatable structure at all. Their foil kites are still the reference in snowkiting and in light wind.

The second consequence of those roots is the attitude to safety. In paragliding a system failure costs more than in kiting, and the habit of designing with margin carried over.

What owning the factory changes

Most kite brands produce at a handful of large Asian factories — frequently the same ones that build their competitors' kites. Ozone built its own.

Custom is real. Your artwork on a production kite is an ordinary order rather than a marketing line. Three methods: the logo is stitched onto the canopy, cut into the cloth, or printed by sublimation. Minimum order is one, and the factory quotes within five working days of receiving your file.

Repairability. Spares, bridles and bladders are listed per model and per version, not "while stocks last".

Iteration speed. Weeks between deciding to change something and having a prototype on the water, rather than a season.

The kite range

Inflatables

Catalyst — the all-rounder for progression, and the kite instructors name when asked what to buy first. We reviewed it separately.

Enduro — a freeride all-rounder one level up: faster, more precise, more demanding.

Edge — the high-aspect race and big-air kite. Best upwind in the range and long hang time, but not a first-year kite: Edge VT Ultra-X from 2,819 €.

Reo — the wave kite, with genuine drift. It disappears above your head and stops interfering with the wave: Reo V7 from 1,249 €.

Vortex — pure big air, for riders who measure a session in metres of altitude: Vortex V2 Ultra-X from 2,469 €.

Reflex — a reflex profile with different behaviour on depower: Reflex from 1,519 €.

Foil kites

This is where Ozone has no real competition on breadth. Explore for snow and travel, Hyperlink closed-cell for water, Zephyr for light wind, Alpha single-skin and ultralight, R1 for racing, Uno and Ignition for teaching.

Alpha V3 Ultra-X from 1,289 € is the clearest example: a single-skin wing that packs into a rucksack and pulls on days when an inflatable stays on the beach.

Wings and harnesses

Flow, Flux, Fly, PowerPack and Liteforce cover the wings; Connect Waist and Connect Seat are among the most common harnesses in rental fleets anywhere. We hand out Connect harnesses in our own rental because they survive a season in other people's hands.

What Ultra-X actually is

Ultra-X is the same kite in a lighter, stronger cloth. Same profile, same geometry, different material.

What you gain: noticeably less weight in the air, therefore better behaviour in marginal wind and a livelier response on the bar. What it costs: considerably more money.

The honest guidance. Ultra-X earns its price if you often ride at the edge of the wind range or travel with your gear. In solid wind at your home spot the standard version does the same job, and the difference is better spent on a board or a course.

What we like and what we do not

Like: the honest version policy — last year's Ozone does not become junk because a new colourway appeared. Repairability and real spares availability. A foil range nobody matches. Custom from one unit.

Do not: the top versions are expensive, Ultra-X especially. The range is wide to the point of confusing a beginner without advice. And some models demand technique — Edge and Vortex forgive less than similarly priced kites elsewhere.

Who should buy something else

Anyone choosing a first kite purely on price — the budget end has cheaper options. Anyone who wants one kite for everything and no homework — a brand with a narrower range makes that easier. And anyone who rides twice a year: Ultra-X and the top models are paid off by water time, not by ownership.
