Description
The VMG is a Formula Kite racing kite, licensed for the 2028 Olympics. Flysurfer list exactly one skill level for it: professional. That is not a turn of phrase — this is course equipment for people who race the clock.
The name stands for Velocity Made Good: the speed that actually moves you toward the mark. The kite sits far forward in the wind window with enormous depower, which lets a racer fly a large size relative to the wind while staying in control, focused on body position and wind shifts.
Fibreglass rods inside the canopy. The two-level, low-drag bridle demands an exceptionally rigid internal structure to support it. Fibreglass rods are therefore built into the rib construction, holding the profile against deformation for clean airflow and high stability in the air. The rod ends are protected and the rods are replaceable.
Five sizes, five constructions. The 15, 19 and 21 use an improved two-level Dyneema bridle. The 11 is a two-level design with an activated brake system. The 9 is a three-level design with brake, built to hold together in stormy weather. Brake settings adjust bar feedback.
Materials for humid air. Porcher skytex 32 runs along the leading edge: it absorbs moisture and stops droplets forming there, so airflow is not interrupted. In Mui Ne, and in the tropics generally, that is not a detail. Canopy is 10D on every size except the 9, which uses TX-light.
Who it is not for. Anyone not racing. For freeriding there is the SOUL; for speed and long foil distances there is the SUPERSONIC, which Flysurfer themselves call easier to relaunch and free of any special start technique. What the VMG wins on is upwind performance and depower — letting you fly the largest kite the conditions allow.
The numbers. Five sizes: 9, 11, 15, 19 and 21. Aspect ratio 6.4 on the 9, 7.0 on the 11, 7.55 on the three larger sizes. 45 cells on the 9, 63 on the rest. Weight with bridle and mixer runs 1.75 to 3.12 kg. Lines are 12 m throughout; bar is 55 cm on the 9 and 11, 60 cm above.
