Eight sizes is rare even among all-round wings. Most brands offer six or seven with the edges trimmed off. The TAO2 runs from 2.5 to 7.0 m², and that is worth examining.

Eight sizes: what that buys

A 2.5 to 7.0 m² spread covers everything from storm wind to calm. But the endpoints matter less than the steps between sizes.

Look: 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 — half-metre steps. Then 5.2, 6.2, 7.0 — steps grow to 0.7 and 1.0 m².

The logic is right and matches the physics. In strong wind half a square metre is a large relative difference (half of three is a sixth), so fine steps are needed there. In light wind half a metre off seven is barely felt, and finer steps would be pointless.

"Beginner to pro" — what sits behind it

That phrasing is rare on a spec sheet, and it usually means a mid aspect ratio and an even character: the wing does not misbehave for a beginner and does not hold back an experienced rider.

The 2.5 — a strong-wind size

2.5 m² is unusually small, and it is worth understanding why it exists.

On a foil, lift comes from the foil rather than from wing area. The wing only has to get you going and hold speed; after that the foil wing does the work. So in strong wind wingfoilers drop to very small sizes — where a kiter would be reaching for a 7 m.

The second scenario is light riders and teenagers. And a third, less obvious one: learning wing handling on the beach. A small wing barely pulls, which makes it ideal for building hand technique.

Choosing a pair

Start from weight and typical spot wind.

• under 65 kg: 3.5 and 4.5 m²
• 65–80 kg: 4.0 and 5.2 m²
• 80–95 kg: 4.5 and 6.2 m²
• over 95 kg: 5.2 and 7.0 m²

The foil correction matters more than the weight correction. A large front wing lifts earlier, letting you size the wing down. A small one needs speed and wants a bigger wing.

Who it suits

Anyone building a quiver. Eight sizes let you match a spot precisely rather than approximately.

Light-wind riders. The 7.0 is a genuine 10 to 13 knot size.

Spots with a wide wind spread. Twelve to thirty knots from one model is realistic.

Beginners. The level starts at beginner, and that is not a formality.

Who it does not suit

Freestylers. An all-round wing loses to a specialist on how fast it dumps power.

Racers. You want higher efficiency — look at powered freeride wings.

Anyone counting grams. Ultra-X and ALUULA builds of other models are lighter.
