Ozone Connect Waist Sliding V4 Review: Why a Spreader Bar Should Slide

Two Ozone harnesses differ by one word in the name and 20 € in price: the Connect Waist V4 at 269 € and the Connect Waist Sliding V4 at 289 €. The difference is the spreader bar, and it matters more than it sounds.

What a sliding spreader bar is

On a normal harness the hook is fixed rigidly at the centre of the belt. On a sliding system the hook travels along a horizontal rail across the front of the harness.

Why: when you rotate your torso, the kite's pull stops coming from straight ahead and moves to the side. A fixed hook then drags the harness with it and twists it around your body. A sliding hook simply moves along its rail, and the harness stays where it is.

In one line: a sliding bar lets your torso rotate independently of the pull point.

Who genuinely needs it

Honestly, not everyone. Three scenarios where the difference is real.

Waves. Riding waves you rotate constantly — looking one way, travelling another, holding the kite in a third direction. A fixed hook twists the harness on every turn.

Winging. On a board under a wing the torso works harder still, and the pull arrives from a constantly changing direction.

Foiling. Upright stance, lots of body movement, low pull — a sliding bar removes some of the fidgeting.

And one scenario where it is not needed: straight-line freeride on a twintip. There the pull is reliably ahead of you, and a fixed bar does its job without complaint.

The other side

A sliding system means extra moving parts, and it is worth knowing that in advance.

More maintenance. The rail collects sand and needs rinsing. A jammed bar is not a breakage, but it is irritating.

Slightly more weight and bulk at the front.

A less predictable pull point for anyone used to a fixed bar. The first sessions feel odd — the hook seems to have a mind of its own.

So a beginner should not buy a sliding bar: there are enough variables already.

"Ultralight" — shared with the base model

Both Connect Waist V4 versions are described as ultralight, and that is not gram-counting for the sake of a number.

A light harness usually means a thinner, more flexible shell. A flexible shell follows your torso as it twists instead of resisting it. Stiff thick harnesses are exactly what rubs the lower back: they do not bend, and you do.

On the sliding model that is especially coherent: both technologies solve the same problem — letting the body move freely.

The same range as the base model and the seat harness: XXS (68–73 cm) to XXL (95–102 cm) in four- to five-centimetre steps.

A reminder of the rule: measure where the harness actually sits — just above the hip bones — and over your wetsuit. Between sizes, take the smaller.
