Ozone Reflex review: an all-rounder with big-air manners

The Reflex is one of the more misunderstood kites in the Ozone range. People buy it expecting a race weapon and get an all-rounder; or they walk past it assuming it is a budget Vortex. Here is what it actually is, by the specification.

• Construction: 18 leading-edge segments, flat aspect ratio 4.9–5.2, projected 2.7–2.9.

What Ozone says about it

The manufacturer's own phrasing is precise: the capability of the Vortex with everyday accessibility. Same class of work — jumps, hang time, powered freeride — but a kite you can simply go and ride without planning an expedition.

That is an unusually honest position. Most brands sell every kite as simultaneously all-round and top-end; here the compromise is stated outright, along with which direction it leans.

The numbers that explain it

Aspect ratio 4.9–5.2 sits between the wave-oriented Reo (4.2) and the race-oriented Edge (5.41). Exactly in the middle, and not by accident: the kite is designed as a bridge between drift and efficiency.

Eighteen leading-edge segments — like the Edge, not fourteen like the Reo. That is about holding profile shape under load.

One detail worth noticing: aspect ratio grows with size — 4.9 on the small kites, 5.2 on the large. Small sizes for strong wind are made slightly more manoeuvrable, large ones for light wind more efficient. Sensible, and not universal in the industry.

Who it suits

Riders who want one kite for everything. The specification lists freeride, big air, freestyle, foil and waves. Usually such a list is marketing; here the geometry backs it up — a mid aspect ratio genuinely allows all of it, just none of it perfectly.

Riders who have outgrown a learning all-rounder. The Catalyst covers a first season; after that many people want more return without the demands of an Edge. The Reflex sits precisely in that gap.

Beginners — with a caveat. Ozone lists it from beginner level, and in the calmer sizes that is true. But if you are still learning, a Catalyst is softer and cheaper.

Who should buy something else

Anyone who knows exactly what they want. Waves only? Reo. Height only? Vortex. Upwind and speed only? Edge. The Reflex loses to each of them in their own discipline, because it is not built for specialisation.

Racers. Just over five aspect ratio is good; the Edge still points higher.

Riders chasing minimum weight. The Reflex is not the lightest in the range: 2,750 g in the 10 m against 2,000 g for an Alpha V3 Ultra-X of similar area. Different constructions, different jobs.

Choosing a size

For a 75 kg rider: 9 m² for 20–25 knots, 11 m² for 16–21, 12–13 m² for 13–18. The depower range is decent, so two sizes cover a season.

The small sizes — 5 and 6 m² — are rarely needed except in persistently strong wind or by light riders.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Reflex differ from the Vortex?

The Vortex is a dedicated big-air kite built around lift. The Reflex does the same thing with more restraint and behaves properly on an ordinary session in exchange.

And from the Catalyst?

The Catalyst is softer and more forgiving — a kite for learning and first seasons. The Reflex is faster and gives more back, and asks for steadier hands.

Is it good for foiling?

Yes, foiling is on the spec list and the mid aspect ratio works. But if foiling is your main discipline, a light foil kite like the Alpha gives you more.

How many sizes for a season?

Two. A 9 and a 12, for instance, cover 13 to 25 knots for an average rider.

Is it a wave kite?

It works, but its drift is worse than the Reo's: higher aspect ratio means the kite moves forward more actively. In waves it is a compromise, not a choice.
