GONG Brand Review: A Kite for 469 Euros and How That Is Possible

A kite at 469 € in a catalogue where entry usually starts above a thousand. Here is the brand that breaks the usual price grid — and, more importantly, how.

What is in the range

  • Foil boards: 47 items from 299 €.
  • Components: 40 items.
  • Pads and mounts: 32 items from 8 €.
  • Wings: 23 items from 379 €.
  • Accessories: 20 items.
  • Inflatable SUP: 16 boards from 99 €.
  • Kites: 11 models from 469 €.
  • Hydrofoils: 8 items.

209 items in total, all with confirmed pricing.

Where the price comes from: three reasons

The question worth reading on for. The gap against rivals is twofold, and it does not appear from nowhere.

1. Direct sales

GONG sells direct, without a dealer network. In the usual scheme a distributor and a shop sit between factory and you, each adding a margin.

Order of magnitude: dealer margin in watersports is rarely below a third of retail. Remove it and you get exactly the gap you see in the price list.

2. No seasonal race

Classic brands refresh their range annually — new graphics, new index, a clearance of last season. That is expensive: development, tooling, marketing, writing off stock.

GONG keeps models longer and updates when there is something to change. We covered the same logic at Core with their eighth-generation XR.

3. Modularity instead of packages

Almost everything at GONG is sold in parts. Pads separately from boards, wings separately from masts, canopies separately from bars.

That lowers the entry price while shifting the assembly work onto you.

What you give up for that price

Honestly, because the gap is too large to leave unexplained.

No advice across a counter. In a direct model you work out what you need yourself. Which is exactly why we write these guides.

Service is harder. With a dealer network, repairs and warranty go through the shop. Here the path is longer.

You must understand modularity. Buying a board, you may find its pads are a separate 20 € purchase. Not a trick, just how the range is built — but worth knowing in advance.

Less data for comparison. The brand does not publish per-size weights the way F-One does.

Kites: eleven items from 469 euros

Six models in three canopy materials:

  • Strutless — 469 €, strutless design.
  • Unik — 519 €.
  • Elips — 589 €.
  • Display — 599 €.
  • Vertigo — 629 €.
  • Ayto — 649 €.

Plus Aramid and Aramid DP versions up to 989 € for a top Ayto. In other words, the entire range fits inside the price of one mid-brand kite.

Foil and wing: the brand's main branch

By item count the foil direction is five times the size of the kite one, which tells you the priorities.

HIPE boards — inflatable wing foil boards from 299 €.

Hard boards in EPS, EPS Pro, FSP 2X, FSP Pro and WOOD 2X constructions.

The Allvator system — modular foils: wings from S to 6XL mount on a shared platform.

Pump foil boards Kluber, Donut and Strada from 359 € — a rare branch few brands keep.

SUP from 99 euros

The lowest SUP price in our whole catalogue — the Pack SUP Inflatable Chip 8'0 at 99 €.

It is a kids' 8-foot board, and the price follows from size and purpose. Adult models start at 199 € for the First Allround.

For comparison, SUP entry at Starboard is 649 €. More than a threefold gap, unpacked in our separate article.

Who it suits

Anyone entering a discipline. The cost of a mistake is severalfold lower.

Anyone willing to work it out themselves. Modularity demands understanding.

Anyone foiling and winging. That is the brand's core.

Anyone assembling a second setup. A light-wind kite that comes out ten times a season, say.

Who it does not suit

Anyone who needs service nearby. A dealer network provides what direct sales cannot.

Anyone who chooses on data. Fewer published specifications than at large brands.

Anyone who wants to buy once and stop thinking. Here you assemble a setup.

Common questions

Why is GONG half the price?

Direct sales without dealer margin, no annual seasonal race, and modularity instead of ready-made packages.

Is quality worse at that price?

The saving is in the sales model rather than materials: the material ladder runs from Dacron to aramid as everywhere.

What has to be bought separately?

Often pads for boards, wings for foils, bars for kites. Budget the whole setup rather than the base item.

What is the brand's main branch?

Foil and wing: 47 foil boards and 23 wings against 11 kites.

Is SUP really 99 euros?

Yes, but that is a kids' 8-foot board. Adult models start at 199 €.
