Flysurfer FOX Kite

The FOX is a trainer kite. Its job is not to ride, but to teach you to read the wind: where the pull is strong in the window, where it fades, what the canopy does when you turn the bar. One size, 1.5 m², and that is enough, because the job is learning.

Open-cell, not inflatable. The canopy fills from oncoming airflow. Nothing to pump, nothing to burst. Unroll it and it is flying a minute later.

Three lines and a real safety system. Let go of the bar and the kite flags out on a single line, shedding almost all its power. The same layout helps you reverse launch it off the ground. That matters more than anything else on a training kite: you can make a mistake and nothing happens.

From age six. That is Flysurfer's own recommendation. It is a rare piece of kit where a child and an adult learn exactly the same thing and get hooked equally — wind is honest, and it yields neither to age nor to stubbornness.

Not just the beach. The FOX is regularly flown with a skateboard, inline skates or ice skates; it makes real power on tarmac and ice. The requirements are the same as on water though: safety awareness, one-handed steering, proper kite control. Helmet and pads are not a politeness — wear them.

What the FOX will not do. It will not lift you on the water or pull a board. That takes a kite from about seven metres and lessons with an instructor. The FOX is the step before: you arrive at your first lesson already understanding the wind window, and you save an hour of tuition and part of its cost.
