Description
Machado is known for something else — small-wave hybrids, wide tails, speed across flat faces. The Groove runs against his own reputation: the maker calls it the closest thing to a high-performance shortboard Rob has ever created.
The difference is rocker. Rob added more curve than his usual shapes: tail rocker that puts you tight in the pocket, elevated nose rocker so you can come down tight off the lip without catching the nose. The tail template brings the shape back into surfing that goes square off the bottom and square off the lip.
Machado puts his own view plainly: every surfboard is a balance of speed and control. The Groove is the one where the balance shifts toward control.
Who it isn't for. Wrong choice for small, gutless surf — that's what the Seaside, Machadocado and Mashup are for. And this much rocker won't let a beginner build speed.
