The Boss Up is the bigger brother of the S Boss, Kelly Slater's first midlength. Three people drew it: Dan Mann, Slater and Kevin Schulz.
Its brief is unusual for a midlength — to work at both extremes: cruising across weak, gutless faces and grinding through overhead tubes. The maker calls it the most well-rounded shape in the whole Slater Designs range and puts it plainly: this is the board you take if you can only take one.
The practical value is travel. When you fly for a week and don't know what you'll find, one board that covers everything beats two specialists that spend half the trip in the bag.
Who it isn't for. Anyone who only surfs powerful, hollow waves — that wants a high-rocker shortboard. A midlength this long turns harder than a soft board for a beginner. And size by weight: a versatile shape doesn't excuse the wrong volume.
