
The first foil-kite collapse is alarming: a moment ago there was a wing, now there is fabric on lines. But it is not a breakage — it is a normal event with a clear procedure. Here it is.
Why foil kites collapse
A foil kite has no frame. Its shape is held by air pressure inside the cells, and that pressure comes from airflow.
The moment line tension is lost, the kite stops moving relative to the air, the flow stops, pressure drops and the canopy folds. A collapse is not a failure but a direct consequence of the construction.
Typical causes: a sudden lull, dumping the bar too fast, the kite reaching the edge of the window and losing speed, or you falling and releasing tension.
The main rule: do not panic and do not pull
The first instinct is to yank the bar in to "catch" the kite. That is a mistake.
Sharp tension on a folded canopy tightens the knot of fabric and line further, and sometimes wraps the kite around its own lines. A collapsed kite is recovered gently and slowly, never with a jerk.
Second rule: keep track of where you are relative to the kite and to any obstacles. A folded kite can refill suddenly and pull.
On water: closed-cell foil kites
Open-cells never go on the water — they take water on. This applies only to closed-cell models such as the Hyperlink, Soul or Sonic.
Step 1. Release the bar fully. Let the kite settle on the water. Do not rush — those few seconds save you minutes.
Step 2. Find the leading edge. The kite should be lying leading-edge towards you, not trailing edge.
Step 3. Pull one side — gently and continuously. The kite will turn leading edge up and start filling from the tip.
Step 4. As soon as the tip lifts and the canopy takes shape, let the kite make its own way to the edge of the window. Do not help with the bar.
What does not work: yanking with both hands, pulling on the rear lines, trying to lift the kite straight up out of the middle of the window.
On snow: single-skin and open-cell
Simpler here, and it is one reason snow instruction happens on foil kites in the first place.
Step 1. Release the bar. On a five-line setup the kite folds along its centre and loses pull — that is normal and it is what you want.
Step 2. Walk to the kite and lay the canopy out with the intakes facing the wind. A single-skin practically opens itself.
Step 3. Check the lines. Nine snow collapses out of ten end not with a canopy problem but with tangled lines — and that is what costs the time.
Step 4. Launch from the edge of the window as usual.
Separately: if the kite has landed in deep snow, turn it intakes-down and shake it out before launching. A twin-skin full of snow flies badly and heavily.
Tangled lines: the real problem
A foil kite has many times more lines than an inflatable, and they differ in length. During a collapse the canopy rotates and passes easily between them.
What to do: do not pull. Walk to the kite, find exactly where the canopy went through the lines, and pass it back the same way. Pulling on the bar here is a reliable way to lock the knot permanently.
Prevention: wind the lines the same way every time and do not drop the bar on the ground with lines loose — most tangles are born during packing, not in flight.
When not to relaunch
There are situations where the right decision is to stop.
- You are tired. Relaunching needs calm and precision.
- You are drifting towards an obstacle. Sort out your position first, the kite second.
- A line or the canopy is torn. It will fly, but unpredictably.
- An open-cell has taken on water. Wind it in and come out.
Common questions
Is a foil-kite collapse a breakage?
No. It follows from the construction: without airflow the canopy loses shape. It recovers as a matter of routine.
Why will my kite not come up off the water?
Usually it is lying trailing-edge towards you, or you are pulling both sides at once. Release, and turn it using one side.
Can I learn this on my own?
The theory, yes. The practice is better done with an instructor: the first time never happens when you are ready for it.
Can an open-cell relaunch from water at all?
It takes on water through the open cells and becomes very heavy. It does not go on the water.
What if the kite has wrapped around its lines?
By hand only, on the ground or swimming. Never try to unwrap it with tension.
