F-One Phantom FCT Review: Three Sizes and Aspect Ratios to 6.4

If the Gravity is the wing you learn on, the Phantom is what you learned for. Here it is in numbers.

The short version

  • 1280 cm² — span 87 cm, aspect ratio 5.9, weight 1.2 kg.
  • 1480 cm² — span 96 cm, aspect ratio 6.2, weight 1.4 kg.

Aspect ratio grows with size — which is counterintuitive

Note the pattern: 5.9 → 6.2 → 6.4. The bigger the wing, the relatively longer and narrower it is.

Usually it goes the other way: manufacturers make large sizes more compact so they do not become unmanageable. Here the logic is different, and it follows the job.

Large wings are bought for light wind and for glide. There efficiency matters more than manoeuvrability: you need to carry yourself a long way on minimal drive rather than carve sharply.

Small wings are bought for speed, where handling at high speed matters — and a relatively lower aspect ratio helps.

The practical conclusion: the Phantom has no "easy" size. All three are about efficiency; they differ only in where they sit on the early-lift-versus-speed scale.

What glide is and why people pay for it

The defining quality of high-aspect wings.

Glide is a foil's ability to carry you without drive, on momentum. You have stopped pumping, the kite is parked or the wing flagged, and you are still flying.

Why it matters:

Downwinders. You travel from swell to swell, and between them there is no drive at all. Glide decides whether you reach the next one or drop.

Pumping. Leg pumping gives impulses; between them glide carries you. The better it is, the less often you pump.

Light wind. A lull need not end in a drop — on good glide you simply reach the next gust.

The physics is simple: a long narrow wing loses less energy at the tips. Exactly as with a glider and with the racing R1 foil kite.

Which size for which job

1680 cm², aspect ratio 6.4. The largest and most efficient. For light wind, downwinders and pumping. Lift arrives early, glide is maximal.

1480 cm², aspect ratio 6.2. The middle. The universal choice for anyone already flying confidently across varied conditions.

1280 cm², aspect ratio 5.9. The smallest and fastest. For speed, for strong wind, for riders who have learned to accelerate.

Important: size follows weight as well as job. At over 90 kg, 1280 cm² will lift you late even with good technique.

Phantom against Gravity

Side by side, because this is the main choice within the range.

Gravity 1800: 1800 cm² area, 95 cm span, aspect ratio 5.0.

Phantom 1680: 1680 cm² area, 104 cm span, aspect ratio 6.4.

Look carefully: the Gravity has more area but less span. It is shorter and wider — hence its calm character and forgiveness.

The Phantom, at slightly less area, is nine centimetres longer. More efficient, faster, better gliding, and responsive to every weight shift.

The transition rule: move from Gravity to Phantom when the foil starts breaching and you run out of speed. Usually the second season.

Who it suits

Anyone flying confidently. All three sizes demand established technique.

Downwinders. 1680 cm² at 6.4 is what the discipline exists for.

Anyone pumping. Glide decides how long you last between impulses.

Amateur racers. 1280 cm² delivers speed.

Who it does not suit

Anyone learning. High aspect ratio does not forgive. Take the Gravity.

Heavy riders on the small size. 1280 cm² over 90 kg means late lift.

Anyone riding chop. A long wing reacts more to uneven water.

Upgrading: change only the wing

The good news about moving from Gravity to Phantom: mast, fuselage and stabiliser stay the same if you are inside the F-One system.

Which Phantom should I buy first?

1480 cm² as the all-rounder if you already fly confidently. 1680 if you ride light wind or weigh over 90 kg.

What is glide?

Why does the large wing have a higher aspect ratio?

Large sizes are bought for light wind and glide, where efficiency matters more than manoeuvrability.

Can I start on a Phantom?

Better not. High aspect ratio demands precise foot placement, and at the start you do not have it.

Do I have to replace the whole system when upgrading?

No. Within F-One the mast, fuselage and stabiliser stay; only the front wing changes.
