
A kite is bought as one item. A foil is bought as four, and each affects how it behaves. We use F-One's range because it comes with full specifications: area, span, aspect ratio and weight for every wing.
What a foil is made of
Four independent parts, in this order of importance.
The front wing generates lift. The main part: it determines how the foil flies. Change only this and you effectively have a different foil.
The mast is the vertical strut from board to wing. Its length decides how much height you have in reserve and how much it forgives.
The fuselage is the horizontal beam joining wing and stabiliser. Longer is more stable, shorter more manoeuvrable.
The stabiliser is the rear wing that damps pitching.

Phantom against Gravity: two front-wing philosophies
These are F-One's two main families, and the difference shows in the figures.
Phantom FCT — three sizes:
- 1280 cm², span 87 cm, aspect ratio 5.9, weight 1.2 kg
- 1480 cm², span 96 cm, aspect ratio 6.2, weight 1.4 kg
- 1680 cm², span 104 cm, aspect ratio 6.4, weight 1.6 kg
Gravity FCT — 1800 cm², span 95 cm, aspect ratio 5.0, weight 1.7 kg.
Look at one pair of numbers: the Gravity has more area (1800 against 1680) but a shorter span (95 against 104). Hence an aspect ratio of 5.0 against 6.4.
What that means on the water:
The Gravity is a short, wide wing. Lift arrives earlier, behaviour is calmer, the wing forgives weight shifts. Speed and glide are lower.
The Phantom is long and narrow. More efficient, faster, glides further. It demands speed and precision.
The rule: the lower the aspect ratio, the calmer the foil. A beginner wants 5.0, not 6.4.
Area: the number that matters most for a beginner
If you remember one thing, remember this.
Front wing area determines at what speed the foil starts lifting you. More area, earlier lift, easier starts.
Reference points:
- 1600 cm² and up — starting out, learning, light wind.
- 1200 to 1500 cm² — confident riding.
- 700 to 1000 cm² — speed, experienced riders.
The Gravity 1800 lands squarely in the first category, the Phantom 1280 in the second.
A common mistake: buying a small wing to grow into. It simply will not lift you at the speed you can generate, and learning stretches into months.
Masts: length matters more than material
F-One offers aluminium and carbon masts, and the choice between them is usually made wrongly.
Length matters more than material. A short mast (60 to 75 cm) is easier at the start and safer in shallow water: less leverage, less height to fall. A long one (85 to 90 cm) gives height in reserve — you can rise further without breaching the wing.
Material is about stiffness and price. Carbon is stiffer and transmits your foot input more precisely. Aluminium is softer, heavier and survives the impacts with the bottom that early sessions guarantee.
The recommendation: first mast, aluminium and short. You will hit something, and better it is aluminium at a sensible price.
What order to buy in
A practical answer to the main question.
First: a complete set rather than parts. The manufacturer has already matched compatible components for a specific job. Compatibility between brands — and even between generations of one brand — is not guaranteed.
Second: the board. And it matters more than the foil at the start. Volume in litres decides whether you can stand still before you have speed. The rule is your weight in kilograms plus 20 to 30 litres.
Third, a season later: a second front wing. The cheapest way to change a foil radically. Mast, fuselage and stabiliser stay as they are.
What not to buy immediately: a carbon mast, a set of stabilisers, shims. All of these are adjustments for someone who already knows what they want to change.
A note on the F-One Rocket
The brand offers a dozen Rocket board variants across disciplines: Wing, Surf, Downwind, Midlength, SUP, Crossover — each in standard and carbon.
That is not marketing fragmentation. A wing board, a downwind board and a surf-foil board differ fundamentally in volume, length and nose shape.

Common questions
Which front wing should I start with?
1600 cm² and up at an aspect ratio around 5. At F-One that is the Gravity 1800: early lift, calm behaviour.
Carbon or aluminium mast?
Aluminium first. It survives the impacts with the bottom that early sessions guarantee.
Can I mix parts from different brands?
Sometimes via adaptors, but compatibility is not guaranteed even within one brand across generations. Start with a set.
What should I upgrade first?
The front wing. It is the cheapest way to change a foil's behaviour radically.
What is a shim for?
A thin wedge changing the stabiliser's angle by fractions of a degree, retuning the foil's character. The cheapest adjustment in the system, but not one you need immediately.
