F-One Gravity FCT 1800 Review: The Wing People Learn to Fly On

People choose their first foil wrongly more often than their first kite. The reason is that intuition says "smaller and faster" when the answer is the opposite. The Gravity is a good place to explain.

Why 1800 cm² is right for starting

Front wing area determines the speed at which the foil starts lifting you out of the water.

A small wing is more efficient but demands speed. And at the start there is nowhere to get speed from: you cannot accelerate on a foil yet, because accelerating requires flying, and flying requires speed. A closed loop people get stuck in for months.

A large wing breaks the loop: it lifts at the speed you can already produce.

1800 cm² is the top of the range, deliberately. Reference points: 1600 cm² and up for learning, 1200 to 1500 for confident riding, 700 to 1000 for speed and experience.

Aspect ratio 5.0 against the Phantom's 6.4

The second figure, and it explains the character.

Gravity: 1800 cm² area, 95 cm span. Phantom 1680: less area, but 104 cm span — more. Hence 5.0 against 6.4.

Low aspect ratio means a short, wide wing. It reacts more slowly to weight shifts, behaves more calmly when your feet are imprecise, and forgives mistakes.

High aspect ratio means long and narrow. More efficient, faster, glides further — and noticeably fussier.

Exactly the logic we saw with kites: the racing R1 at 7.0 against the simple Explore at 4.45. The higher the aspect ratio, the more efficient the craft and the less it forgives.

1.7 kg: why weight is not the point here

The Gravity is half a kilo heavier than the Phantom 1280 (1.2 kg), which can be off-putting.

But foil weight does not work like kite weight. A foil sits in water, not in air. Its lift comes from flow rather than from fighting gravity — water is eight hundred times denser than air, and half a kilo there decides almost nothing.

On the water, half a kilo between wings is not felt at all. What is felt is area and aspect ratio.

When you outgrow the Gravity

An honest section, because it happens fairly quickly.

Sign one: the foil breaches. You accelerate, the wing rises too high, lift stalls. On a large wing that happens sooner, because lift arrives at lower speed.

Sign two: you run out of speed. A large wing creates drag, and its speed ceiling is lower.

Sign three: you start thinking about downwinders and pumping. Those need glide, and glide comes from aspect ratio.

Usually this is the second season. And you only need to change the front wing — mast, fuselage and stabiliser stay. It is the cheapest upgrade in foiling.

Who it suits

Anyone starting to foil. The main scenario.

Heavy riders. Area compensates for weight: at 95 kg a small wing will lift you even later.

Light-wind riding. Early lift means flying in wind where a small wing has you ploughing water.

Schools. A forgiving wing beats an efficient one when teaching.

Who it does not suit

Anyone already flying confidently. Look at the Phantom from 5.9 aspect ratio up.

Downwinders and pump foilers. You want glide, and that comes from aspect ratio.

Racers. A different end of the range entirely — the Pro Race.

What you need with the wing

The wing is one of four foil parts. You also need a mast, fuselage and stabiliser, plus a board.

At the start buy a complete set rather than assembling parts: compatibility between generations is not guaranteed. Purchase order and what each part does are in our setup guide.

Common questions

What wing area does a beginner need?

1600 cm² and up. Less, and the foil will not lift you at the speed you can produce.

Why is low aspect ratio better for starting?

A short wide wing reacts more slowly to weight shifts and forgives imprecise foot placement.

Does foil weight matter?

On the water, barely: a foil works in water rather than in air. It matters carrying it and in luggage.

When should I change the wing?

When breaches start and you run out of speed. Usually the second season.

Can I fit a Gravity to another brand's mast?

Sometimes via adaptors, but compatibility must be checked. Staying inside one system is simpler and safer.
