Prolimit Brand Review: Wetsuits, Harnesses and Protection

Everyone writes about kites and boards. Almost nobody writes about what you are wearing, even though your wetsuit decides whether you ride for two hours or forty minutes. Prolimit is exactly that second half of the kit.

What the brand does

A Dutch company working across watersports: wetsuits, harnesses, impact vests, booties, bags. Not a single kite, not a single board — a deliberate specialisation.

Our catalogue carries 13 Prolimit items: five wetsuits, five harnesses, two vests and a board bag.

Wetsuits: four rungs of one ladder

The range is organised by price, and each step buys something specific.

• Fusion Shorty — 121 €. Short, for warm water.
• Fusion Steamer — 202 €. Full suit, base series.
• Predator Steamer — 267 €. Mid series.
• Mercury Steamer — 324 €. Top of the range.

What the money buys from Fusion to Mercury. Not thickness — that is broadly the same across full suits. Three other things: neoprene stretch (a better suit moves with your shoulders instead of fighting them), seam sealing (taped rather than simply stitched) and an inner lining that holds warmth.

The practical conclusion: if you ride warm water and wear a suit against wind rather than cold, buy the Fusion. The difference only shows where it is genuinely cold.

A separate item is the Poncho at 56 €. Not a wetsuit but a changing robe. A small thing that solves a real one: changing on a busy beach without it is awkward.

Harnesses: a threefold price spread

Five models from 154 € to 446 € — the widest spread in the range.

What changes as the price climbs is the stiffness and character of the shell. Cheaper models are soft — comfortable immediately, but they fold under load and ride up. Expensive ones hold a stiff shell that spreads the load across your back.

Honestly about this choice: a 154 € harness is a sound start if you ride twenty days a year. At a hundred days, the gap between a soft and a stiff harness is the state of your lower back by the end of the season.

Vests: bought last, and wrongly so

Two impact vests: the Fusion Vest Half at 97 € and the Predator Vest Half at 113 €.

An impact vest is not a buoyancy aid. It does not float you; it absorbs impact — with the water on a bad landing, with the board, with your own bar. A flat landing off a jump is an impact comparable to hitting something solid, and your ribs do not care that it was water.

The half cut covers the torso without restricting the arms on the bar. For kiting that is the right format: full-length vests limit movement.

Bags

The Kitesurf Boardbag at 178 € is the only Prolimit bag in the catalogue.

A reminder we repeat in every board review: a twintip breaks in luggage more often than on the water. A bag pays for itself in one flight, and it is the most underrated purchase in kiting.

Sizing

Prolimit wetsuits here come in S, M, L and XL. A suit is chosen by height and weight together, and it must fit tight: a loose suit flushes water through and does not warm you at all.

A harness is chosen by waist circumference, not by clothing size. We cover that separately.

Who Prolimit suits

Anyone assembling a first kit. Suit, harness and vest from one range is a clear way to avoid both overspending and forgetting something.

Anyone riding cool water. Crimea in spring and autumn, or the north — there the wetsuit matters more than the kite.

Common questions

What wetsuit thickness do I need?

It depends on the water, not the air. Warm water takes a shorty, cool water needs a full steamer. We cover it in a separate article.

How does the Fusion differ from the Mercury?

Neoprene stretch, seam construction and lining. Thickness is comparable, so in warm water the difference barely registers.

Do I need an impact vest if I do not jump?

It still helps: most impacts come not from landings but from crashes while learning and from meeting your own board.

Does Prolimit make kites?

No. The brand specialises in rider equipment: suits, harnesses, protection and bags.

How do I look after a wetsuit?

Rinse it in fresh water after every session and dry it inside out in the shade. UV kills neoprene faster than salt water does.
