More boards get broken travelling on a car than in the water. Two causes: the board isn't cinched down and slides on the roof, and it sits on bare metal. Pads and straps deal with both.
Straps for surfboard. Buy length with margin: the strap has to go round the board and the bar and still leave a tail to tension. A strap pulled to its limit works loose on the first bump.
Who it isn't for. Straps don't replace pads — a board cinched onto bare metal gets damaged faster than a loose one. And don't overtighten: a board isn't luggage, and excess force dents the deck.
