Description

The AVID is a wing for riders who jump. Flysurfer give it two disciplines — freestyle and freeride — and the full skill range, beginner to professional. Everything about it comes back to one thing: the frame.

The UPE Aramid Frame, and what it means on the water. Leading edge and strut are built from UX10 fabric: ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene — the material you know as Dyneema — with aramid reinforcement. It weighs about 85 g/m² against Dacron's 150-160, so nearly half. The more interesting number is the other one: at 8 psi this fabric matches the rigidity of Dacron at 15. You inflate softer and get a stiffer wing.

Why stiffness matters. A soft frame breathes when you load it before take-off, and part of your input disappears into fabric deformation. A stiff frame gives it back — that is pop. The AVID runs two push-push air valves to hold pressure and canopy tension.

The outline. Pointy planform, medium aspect ratio, centred point of lift. Deliberately higher back-hand pressure so power returns the instant you sheet in after a rotation — while still letting the wing spin freely on every axis.

An honest word on the material. Flysurfer themselves compare UX10 to Aluula and put it at roughly 90% of the stiffness and longevity for a fraction of the cost. If you want the last few percent, that is Aluula and a different price bracket. The AVID sits exactly on the line where premium stops short of ultra-premium.

Who it is not for. Riders who live in waves and want a calm wing floating quietly behind them — that is the TAO². The AVID is built for straight-line speed and pop, and it rides like it.

K1 instructor's take
“We ride this gear ourselves and teach on it. The main thing is picking the size for your weight and wind: bigger in light wind, smaller when it blows. If you're unsure, message us — we'll put together an honest setup, no upselling.”
