Description
The 720 IV is a strapless freestyle board and, at the same time, the softest entry into wave riding in CORE's whole range. An unusual combination, but an explicable one.
Why it suits riders coming off a twintip. The maker says it plainly: this board asks less of your foot placement and weight shift than classic wave shapes. High tilt stability and predictable feedback mean your first bottom turn works straight away, without months of adjustment. If you have ridden twintip all your life and want to try waves, start here rather than on a Ripper.
What the compact shape buys. The 720 is noticeably lighter than CORE's other boards — a direct advantage in air tricks and rotations. The profile is thinner, so the board feels more direct underfoot.
Tail rocker reduced by about 15%. Less water resistance, easier planing, better upwind and more speed. For strapless freestyle that matters: speed before take-off decides the trick.
Four concaves in the base. A double concave runs inside the main channel, framed by two more. The purpose is soft landings and composure in chop. The channels themselves are flatter, so the board is looser without losing control.
Grab rails. The rails are shaped so thumb and palm find purchase on a fast grab. For freestyle with grabs that is not decoration.
Rocket tail. Releases easily from the water, tracks straight, stays calm rail to rail. No surprises, no nervousness.
Construction. XPS core — waterproof and stronger than EPS. The Soric layer now wraps the entire rail, removing the classic weak point around the heel. The laminate is impregnated by an infusion process borrowed from the carbon Imperator programme: more even laminate quality, and enough stiffness to build the board thinner than a classic surfboard construction.
Sizes and rider weight. 4'11" (16.1 L) for 50-75 kg, 5'1" (19.1 L) for 65-90 kg, 5'3" (20.8 L) from 80 kg.
Who it is not for. Riders in big surf looking for drive out of the tail through powerful sections — that is the Ripper 6.
