Description
The Badger II is a board for small waves — the kind the wind raises rather than an ocean swell. Plenty of volume in the nose, a fish tail, a compact shape, and consequently a strong aptitude for strapless freestyle.
The limitation first. Like the Pro, the Badger II has no inserts for foot straps. There is nowhere to mount them. This board is for strapless riding only.
What changed in the second generation. The shape stayed as it was — it already suited the job. The finish was reworked and is now roughly 100 g lighter. Not much on paper, but in jumps, rotations and aerials you feel it immediately.
Fish outline. The signature fish tail lengthens the working rail while reducing tail area. Hence tight, snappy turns and fast rail-to-rail changes with good grip and speed.
Hybrid bottom. A spine in the nose settles the board in chop, running into a double concave for lift under the back foot. Right at the tail, a vee adds control and — as the maker puts it — allows any turn radius you care to set.
Flat rocker through entry, middle and exit: early planing and controlled edging both in the bottom turn and before take-off.
Construction differs from CORE's other surfboards. The XPS core is waterproof with very high compressive strength. Outside it, fibreglass plus a Soric layer in the deck: denting it, the maker says, is practically impossible. The laminate is infused — the same process as the carbon Imperator — which allowed a thinner build than a classic surfboard.
Carbon only where it earns its place. The tail carries a carbon patch against dents and snaps. Because the patch is partial, the tail keeps the flex it needs and the board stays light overall.
Sizes and rider weight. 4'11" (17.3 L) for 45-65 kg, 5'2" (19.7 L) for 55-80 kg, 5'5" (22.6 L) from 80 kg.
How it differs from the Badger Pro. The Pro is full carbon, weighs 2 kg and comes in one size, 5'2". The Badger II is glass, heavier, but available in three sizes and cheaper. Unless you are chasing the last few percent in the air, this is the sensible one.
For Mui Ne, where the swell is usually wind-driven and modest, it is a working choice. Official CORE dealer, worldwide shipping.
