Prolimit Impact Vests: Why You Need One Even If You Do Not Jump

An impact vest is bought last, and often not at all. The reasoning goes: "I do not jump, so I do not need one." The reasoning is wrong, and here is why.

An impact vest is not a life jacket

A fundamental difference, and one people confuse constantly.

A life jacket keeps a person afloat, including unconscious. It is designed for buoyancy and carries certification.

An impact vest absorbs impact. It has some buoyancy, but it is small and incidental — not designed for rescue and no substitute for one.

Worth being honest about: an impact vest will add a little flotation and cut the cost of a hit substantially, but it will not make you unsinkable.

Three impacts that happen without jumping

One: your own board. The most common kiting injury. The board comes off your feet in a crash and comes back on the line or on a wave — sometimes edge first. The vest earns its place in literally every lesson.

Two: the bar. Under a sudden load and a tumble, the bar arrives at your chest and face. For a beginner this happens regularly.

Three: the water. A flat landing even at modest speed is an impact with a surface. Water at speed behaves hard, and your ribs do not care that it was water.

And separately: shallow water and the bottom. Many teaching spots are waist deep, and falling backwards means meeting sand with your back.

Why the half cut

Both Prolimit models in the catalogue are Half — shortened.

The logic is simple. A full-length vest covers more but restricts the torso and arms. And in kiting the arms work the bar and the torso twists on every turn.

A half cut covers the chest, ribs and back — the areas that actually take hits — while leaving shoulders and hips free. For kiting that is the right compromise, and nearly every brand chooses it.

As across the rest of the Prolimit range, the Predator sits a step above the Fusion. In vests the money usually goes into neoprene stretch and cut: a better vest restricts movement less at the same level of protection.

In practice: at a 16 € difference there is no point economising. If a vest gets in your way you will not wear it, and a vest you do not wear protects nothing.

Getting the size right

A vest is chosen by height and weight together and must fit snugly. A loose vest shifts on impact, and the padding ends up somewhere other than where you were hit.

A simple check: with the vest fastened, raise your arms above your head. If it rides up into your armpits, it is too big.

Try it over your wetsuit if you ride in one: neoprene adds bulk.

Who needs one most

Learners. The first month is a series of meetings with your board and bar. The vest is more useful here than at any later stage.

Jumpers. Obvious, but worth repeating: a flat landing from height is what the vest was invented for.

Anyone riding shallow water. The bottom is closer than it looks.

Children and teenagers. Not negotiable.

What a vest does not do

Honestly, so nobody carries a false sense of safety.

It will not float you unconscious. It is not a life jacket.

It does not protect your head. For that you need a helmet — the Ozone Exo Helmet, for example.

It does not replace self-rescue. Getting yourself back to shore without a board matters more than any equipment.

Common questions

Do I need a vest if I swim well?

Yes. A vest protects against impact rather than drowning, and swimming ability is beside the point.

Does it get in the way of working the bar?

A half cut, barely. Full-length vests interfere more, which is why kiting rarely uses them.

Can I wear it under a wetsuit?

It normally goes over. Underneath, it breaks the suit's seal and the suit stops warming you.

Does a vest replace a helmet?

No. Different areas of protection, and a helmet matters just as much, especially in shallow water.

How long does an impact vest last?

Several seasons. UV and drying in the sun kill it, as with any neoprene.
