Ensis SCORE Review: One Wing in Three Builds

The SCORE is Ensis's core freeride wing and the most interesting position in the range. Not for its performance, but because the same model is sold in three builds, and the choice is not about size but about how you hold the wing.

Seven sizes: why that matters

A range from 2.8 to 6.6 m² is wide, and the steps are small: 2.8, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.2, 5.9, 6.6.

Small steps matter more in wingfoiling than in kiting, and here is why. You hold a wing in your hands, so being overpowered registers immediately — not as depower, as on a kite, but as physical load on your shoulders. Missing by half a metre of area here means ending the session an hour early.

The working logic: a size for your weight and typical wind, plus a second one step down. For a 75 to 85 kg rider that is usually a 5.2 and a 4.0.

The extremes: 2.8 for strong wind and light riders, 6.6 for light wind and heavy riders.

Boom versus handles: the main fork

BOOM against HANDLE is 76 € at the smallest size, and it is about grip rather than quality.

A boom is a rigid tube along the wing. You take it anywhere along its length and slide your hands without letting go. That gives precise balance adjustment on the move and easy hand changes through turns.

Handles are soft loops in fixed positions. Lighter, more compact in luggage, cheaper. But there are exactly as many grip points as loops, and changing hands means letting go and taking hold again.

The full comparison is separate. In short: a boom is easier for a beginner because it forgives an imprecise grip.

What the ACE build gives you

ACE is the brand's premium construction: better materials, lower weight, a stiffer frame.

Stiffness works differently on a wing than on a kite. A soft wing deforms under load: the leading edge flexes, the profile wanders, and part of your effort goes into the deformation instead of drive. A stiff frame returns everything you put into it.

The second part is weight. The wing hangs off your arms all session, and two or three hundred grams reaches your shoulders within about an hour.

Who needs it: people who ride a lot and are limited by arm fatigue rather than technique. For the first two seasons the standard build covers the same jobs.

Who the SCORE suits

Anyone starting out. The stated purpose is exactly that: freeride and first steps.

Anyone wanting one wing for a season. The size range lets two, sometimes one, cover a spot.

Anyone building an all-Ensis setup. Wing, board and foil from one brand means guaranteed compatibility.

Who it does not suit

Freestylers. The SCORE is a freeride wing. For freestyle the range has the TOPSPIN.

Racers. A different job and different geometry.

Anyone chasing minimum weight. Look at the DRIVE ALUULA — at a different price.

What you need alongside the wing

A foil board and the foil itself — without them the wing is useless. Ensis offers complete sets that remove the compatibility question.

A leash. A released wing is gone downwind in seconds.

A helmet. In wingfoiling the foil mast is a hard, sharp object under the water, and landing on it is not an abstraction. Ensis makes its own.

A wing harness — optional at the start, but it takes the load off your arms on long runs.
