Red Paddle Co Brand Review: Premium Inflatable SUP and What You Pay For

An inflatable SUP can cost 199 € or 1 751 €. Here is the upper end — and what is genuinely in it.

What is in the range

  • Inflatable SUP: 31 items, sold as Packages.
  • Accessories: 16 items — paddles, leashes, straps.
  • Components: RSS battens.
  • Buoyancy aid: for a dog — 95 €.

Top items: the 17'0" XL MSL Package at 1 751 €; the 11'0" Compact MSL 1000 at 1 444 €; the 14'0" Voyager MSL 800 at 1 400 €.

The word Package matters

The first thing that changes how the price reads.

Package means a complete kit: board, paddle, pump, leash, backpack. Not a board alone.

Why that matters when comparing: you are weighing 1 400 € for a kit against 649 € for another brand's board that still needs a 199 € paddle and a pump.

A gap remains, but it is smaller than the headline figures suggest. Budget the whole kit — a rule that applies across our catalogue.

What MSL means

The names carry MSL, MSL 800, MSL 1000.

It denotes the material technology and its class. The numbers show the tier: higher means a higher construction class.

What that gives in an inflatable. The core problem of any inflatable SUP is stiffness. A board that sags beneath you in the middle loses glide and becomes a lilo. We covered that in our construction comparison.

Top constructions address exactly that: a denser bond between top and bottom, more layers, higher working pressure, less deflection.

The practical sign of a stiff board: above 90 kg you do not feel the middle settling beneath you over a long paddle.

RSS battens: something budget boards lack

The catalogue lists an RSS Batten at 17 €, and it explains part of the price gap.

These are stiff ribs slotted into pockets along the rails. They act as stringers, adding longitudinal stiffness exactly where a board flexes most.

What that gives: the board holds shape at lower pressure and sags less under a heavy rider.

Why they are a separate catalogue item: battens are consumables — they get lost and broken. Good that they can be replaced instead of the board.

Compact: a board that packs smaller

A separate branch — the 9'2" and 11'0" Compact at 1 400 € to 1 444 €.

The idea: the board folds smaller than a normal inflatable through construction and packing.

Who genuinely needs it: anyone flying with a board regularly, living in a flat without storage, or driving a small car.

An honest caveat: compactness costs weight and money. If your board lives in a garage, the premium is pointless.

Paddles: 118 to 175 euros

  • Cruiser 3-Piece Fibreglass — 118 €, with a Small version.
  • Hybrid Tough — 122 €.
  • Prime Tough Lightweight — 153 €.
  • Hybrid 3-Piece Carbon — 174 €.
  • Compact 5-Piece Collapsible Carbon — 175 €.

Note the five-piece paddle. Five sections mean packability at the cost of stiffness: more joints, more play. It is bought by people who fly.

On the Small version: a rarity worth praising. Paddles are sized to height, and a shortened version for shorter adults and teenagers is something most ranges simply lack.

How to choose length and material: our paddle guide.

Small items that reveal the approach

A pump hose as a separate item — 9 €. Trivial, but it means spares exist rather than "buy a new pump".

A carry strap — 34 €. Carrying an inflated board under one arm is awkward, and a strap solves it.

A dog buoyancy aid — 95 €. An item you can smile at, but it reflects a real scenario: SUP with a dog is genuinely widespread.

Who it suits

Anyone paddling regularly and at length. Stiffness shows over distance.

Anyone above 90 kg. There the construction difference registers immediately.

Anyone flying with a board. The Compact branch.

Anyone wanting to buy once. A complete kit with nothing to add.

Who it does not suit

Anyone sampling the discipline. Take a 199 € board and find out whether it is for you.

Anyone paddling three times a summer. The difference will not appear.

Anyone with a holiday house and a calm lake. There is nowhere to reveal such a board there.

Common questions

Why does Red Paddle cost three times more?

A high-stiffness construction, a complete kit in the price and available spares. Compare kit with kit.

What does MSL mean?

The material construction class. Higher means a stiffer board with less deflection under a rider.

What are RSS battens?

Stiff ribs in rail pockets: they act as stringers and add longitudinal stiffness. Sold separately as consumables.

Why the Compact branch?

The board packs smaller than a normal inflatable — for flights and flats without storage. It costs weight and money.

Who should not pay the premium?

Anyone sampling the discipline or paddling a few times a summer: the stiffness difference will not show.
