A paddle feels secondary after the board, and that is a mistake. In an hour of paddling you take around two thousand strokes, and paddle weight multiplies by that number.
Prices for reference
- Tufskin Value —
Material: what triples the price
Fibreglass (Tufskin) —
79 €. Heavier, more flexible, cheaper. Flex is not purely a drawback: it damps shock into the shoulder.Carbon — from
199 €. Lighter and stiffer. Stiffness means your effort goes into the stroke rather than into bending the shaft. In grams. The gap between glass and carbon is roughly 200 to 300 g. It sounds trivial until you multiply by two thousand strokes an hour.
Where the difference shows:
- Half an hour at the beach — not at all.
- A two-hour cruise — in your shoulders the next day.
- Ten kilometres and beyond — it decides whether you finish.
Section count: 2 or 3
The names carry 2pc Adj and 3pc Adj — two- and three-piece adjustable.
Two-piece is stiffer. Fewer joints means less play and less loss.
Three-piece is more compact. It fits the backpack with an inflatable board and flies as luggage.
A simple rule: inflatable board → three-piece, or you lose the packability you paid for. Hard board plus your own car → two-piece.
Fixed-length paddles exist too — variants like "M / 29mm Carbon F40" without the Adj marking. Stiffest and lightest, but the length is set, so they suit riders who know their size.
Length: the parameter everyone ignores
The classic rule: paddle length = your height + 20 to 25 cm for cruising.
By discipline:
- Cruising and touring: height + 20 to 25 cm.
- Racing: height + 15 to 20 cm — shorter, higher cadence.
- Waves: height + 10 to 15 cm — shorter for manoeuvring.
Which is why an adjustable paddle earns its money early on: you find your length by trying rather than from a table. And the whole family can use it.
Signs the length is wrong: a sore lower back means the paddle is long and you are bending; tired shoulders with a short stroke mean it is too short.
What F35 and F40 mean
Variants carry 29mm Carbon F35 or F40.
29 mm is shaft diameter. Thinner is easier in the hand but less stiff.
F35 / F40 is blade rake. The blade sits at an angle to the shaft, and that is not decoration: the angle keeps the blade vertical for longer during the power phase.
More rake (F40) — a shorter effective phase, higher cadence. Racing.
Less rake (F35) — a longer phase, steadier glide. Cruising and distance.
In practice: when in doubt, take the smaller angle. It is more versatile.
Separately: the Kayak Blade add-on
At
59 € it turns a SUP paddle into a kayak paddle — a second blade on the other end.Why it matters in practice: you can sit down and paddle kayak-style when the wind picks up or your legs tire. Heading back upwind while seated, you sit far lower with much less windage — sometimes that is the only way home.
For touring and outings with children it is underrated. It costs less than the cheapest paddle.

Inflatable board, flying with it → three-piece.
One paddle for the family → adjustable, without question.
Touring → carbon plus the Kayak Blade add-on at
59 €.Common questions
How much lighter is a carbon paddle?
By 200 to 300 g. An hour of paddling is around two thousand strokes, so over distance it decides.
What length should a paddle be?
Your height plus 20 to 25 cm for cruising, plus 15 to 20 for racing, plus 10 to 15 for waves.
Two-piece or three-piece?
Three-piece with an inflatable board for packability; two-piece with a hard board, since it is stiffer.
What do F35 and F40 mean?
Blade rake. More rake means higher cadence (racing), less means steadier glide (cruising).
Should a first paddle be carbon?
If you paddle at weekends, no. The difference shows from around ten kilometres.
