Duotone Brand Review: Three Constructions per Model

At most brands you choose a model and then a size. Duotone adds a third axis — construction — and it doubles the price. Here is how to navigate it.

Three tiers instead of one

The key to the whole range.

The base version is the standard construction. The Evo from 1 399 €, the Mono from 1 149 €.

SLS is lighter and reinforced. Evo SLS 1 919 €, Rebel SLS 2 009 €.

D/LAB is the top tier. Evo D/LAB 2 549 €, Rebel D/LAB 2 899 €, Juice D/LAB 3 399 €.

Within one model the spread runs from 1 399 € to 2 549 €. That is more than the gap between models at many brands.

What changes with construction — and it is unexpected

Here is the interesting part, visible in the manufacturer's own descriptions.

The three Evo versions carry different stated purposes:

• Evo — "freeride and progression after lessons".
• Evo SLS — "freeride and wave riding".
• Evo D/LAB — "freeride and high jumps".

So these are not one model at three prices but three different kites under a shared name. A lighter, stiffer construction is not simply "better" — it changes character: lightness buys drift (hence waves on the SLS) and lift (hence jumping on the D/LAB).

That differs fundamentally from F-One's TEC and BRAINCHILD, where two versions are one kite in two weights with the same stated purpose.

The practical conclusion: with Duotone you cannot pick a model and then decide on budget. You choose the model-and-construction pair together.

The kite range

• Evo — the all-rounder, three constructions. The workhorse.
• Rebel — high jumps and light wind. SLS and D/LAB only.
• Juice — light wind. From 2 319 €, D/LAB 3 399 €.
• Mono — single strut, the most affordable: from 1 149 €.

Note the Rebel: there is no base version at all, only SLS and D/LAB. The brand decided this model exists only in premium constructions.

Boards: the same tier logic

The twintips follow the same principle — Concept Blue and SLS.

• Gonzales — 499 €, the most affordable.
• Select, Soleil, Spike, Jaime — 769 € in Concept Blue, 1 199 € in SLS.
• TS Big Air and TS Freestyle SLS — 1 199 €, specialised.
• Shred — 699 €, TS Park — 749 €.

Concept Blue is not about colour: it is Duotone's line emphasising recycled and bio-based materials. Hence a price below SLS at a comparable class.

Surfboards: Whip, Volt, Blur, Provoke

Duotone's directional branch is unexpectedly strong: four models, three of them in SLS and D/LAB versions.

Prices run from 1 149 € for SLS to 1 399 € for D/LAB. For comparison, the F-One Mitu Pro Bamboo costs 898 €.

Duotone keeps directionals in the premium segment, while F-One offers a cheaper way in. Worth knowing if you are assembling a first wave setup.

Who Duotone suits

Anyone willing to pay for construction. D/LAB is the market's upper limit, and the brand holds it honestly.

Anyone who knows their discipline precisely. Three Evo versions for three jobs is precision, provided you know which is yours.

Wave riders. An Evo SLS plus a Whip or Volt is a coherent setup.

Light-wind riders. The Juice is a dedicated model rather than "a big size of an all-rounder".

Who it does not suit

Anyone who chooses by numbers. Our catalogue carries no full weight and range tables for Duotone, unlike F-One.

Anyone after a cheap entry. The Mono starts at 1 149 €, but it is a specific single-strut construction.

Foil-kite riders. Duotone does not make them.
