A 45 cm aluminium mast costs
66 €; a PRO Ultra carbon 1050 costs 2 627 €. Here is where that fortyfold gap comes from and where you sit on that scale.Length first: it matters more than material
The mast is the one foil component where a wrong choice shows on your first session.
Short (45 to 68 cm):
- For shallow water. A 90 cm mast in a metre of water is a guaranteed bottom strike.
- For learning. You fall from lower, and a breaching wing dumps you less abruptly.
- Less leverage on the board's inserts.
Long (82 to 105 cm):
- More height in reserve: the wing breaches less on waves and chop.
- You can fly higher and hold longer.
- You need depth — a metre and a half beneath you at minimum.
Practical guide: a first mast is 68 to 75 cm. A compromise that works almost anywhere.
What carbon actually gives
Worth understanding the mechanics, or the premium looks absurd.
The mast is the lever between your feet and the wing. All steering passes through it. If the mast flexes, part of your movement goes into bending rather than turning the wing.
What a soft mast feels like:
- Delay. You press, and the wing responds a fraction later.
- Vibration at speed. The mast starts to "sing" — that is resonance.
- Lost precision in turns. The wing goes somewhere other than where you sent it.
What a stiff carbon mast gives: your input reaches the wing whole and instantly.
And the other half: weight. The mast is the longest part of a foil and its mass hangs at the end of a lever. You feel the difference carrying the kit and lifting the board on the water.
The price ladder and what sits between steps
- 19 mm aluminium —
The key jump is aluminium to carbon: roughly eightfold. Within carbon the steps are far gentler.
High Modulus refers to fibre elastic modulus: higher modulus means a stiffer mast at the same weight. We covered the mechanics in our wings article.
When aluminium is enough
An honest list, because the money gap is large.
While learning. Balance limits you, not mast stiffness. And aluminium is no loss when you hit the bottom — which you will.
In shallow water. Short lengths exist only in aluminium; nobody makes a 45 or 60 cm carbon mast.
For rental and school kit. Repairability beats efficiency.
At low session counts. Twenty days a year will not repay a thousand-euro difference.
When carbon is essential
In pumping. Every cycle is an impulse, and a soft mast damps it. Here the premium converts directly into distance — the discipline explained.
In downwind. Long sessions where weight and vibration accumulate.
At speed. Aluminium mast resonance begins exactly there.
Above 90 kg. More load means more visible flex.
On base plates and compatibility
The point that wrecks more plans than material choice.
The mast attaches to the board through a base plate. On AXIS carbon masts the plate is often included — the names read "Mast & Base Plate".
Board mounting standards differ. Two bolts, four bolts, a track system — not interchangeable.
Mast and fuselage must also match by generation.
The rule: buying a mast separately, send us your board and foil models — we verify before payment. A mast that does not fit takes longer and costs more to return than any other part.
Common questions
What mast length should I buy first?
68 to 75 cm. A compromise that works at almost any spot.
What does a carbon mast give?
Stiffness: your input reaches the wing whole and instantly. A soft mast delays response and vibrates at speed.
When is aluminium enough?
While learning, in shallow water, for rentals, and at low session counts. Short lengths exist only in aluminium.
Why is the price gap so large?
Aluminium to carbon is an eightfold jump. Within carbon, the steps by fibre modulus are gentler.
Will a mast fit my board?
Mounting standards differ. Send us your board and foil models and we will check before payment.
