Sea breeze and thermal wind: why the coast blows on a timetable

Half the wind kitesurfers ride worldwide is thermal rather than synoptic. It is made by the sun, not by a pressure chart, which is why forecasts so often miss it. Here is how sea breeze works, why it runs on a timetable, and how to use that to stop sitting on the beach.

Where a sea breeze comes from

The mechanism is simple and always the same: land heats faster than water. During the day the sun raises the temperature of sand and rock within a couple of hours, while the sea barely changes — water has an enormous heat capacity.

Warm air over the shore rises, cooler air from the sea moves in to replace it, and that is the sea breeze: a daytime wind blowing onshore.

At night it reverses. Land cools faster, the air above it becomes denser and drains towards the sea, giving a land breeze — a night wind blowing offshore. It is usually weaker, because the night-time temperature difference is smaller.

The timetable it runs on

Unlike synoptic wind, thermal wind is predictable, and that is its main virtue for planning.

Morning — calm. The ground has not warmed and there is no temperature difference yet. This is theory-on-the-sand time, not water time.

Late morning — it fills in. Usually between ten and twelve, depending on season and cloud.

Afternoon — peak. Two to five, when the temperature difference is greatest.

Evening — it dies. The sun goes down, the land stops heating, the engine switches off.

That is why lesson timetables look identical at schools all over the world: theory in the morning, water after midday.

What strengthens it and what kills it

Clear sky strengthens it. Direct sun is the fuel. Thick daytime cloud means a weak breeze or none.

Dark dry shoreline strengthens it. Sand and rock heat faster than vegetation and water. The world's best breeze spots sit next to deserts for a reason.

Cold water strengthens it. The bigger the contrast between land and sea, the stronger the circulation.

Rain and fronts kill it. The general weather always outranks the local mechanism: when a system arrives, thermals give way.

Telling breeze from synoptic wind

A practical test: thermal wind changes strength by the hour and keeps its direction. Calm at dawn, 18 knots by lunch, quiet again by evening, one direction all day — that is a breeze.

Synoptic wind, by contrast, blows steadily for days and can change direction as a front passes.

They often add up: a light general flow plus a breeze makes a good working day. They also subtract: if the general wind blows offshore and the breeze onshore, they cancel, and the spot is glassy while the forecast promises numbers.

Why forecasts get breeze wrong

Forecast models compute the atmosphere on a grid measured in kilometres. Breeze circulation happens at a smaller scale, so the model either misses it or smooths it away.

Hence the familiar situation: the app promises 8 knots and the spot delivers 18. Or the reverse — 15 promised, mirror-flat water, because it has been overcast all day and the engine never started.

The conclusion is simple: at breeze spots trust locals over models. And trust a webcam, which shows the water right now rather than a simulation.

Is a sea breeze strong wind?

It can be very strong. At good breeze spots the afternoon peak reaches 25–30 knots. It depends on the temperature difference and the terrain.

Why is it always calm in the morning?

Because the mechanism runs on a temperature difference, and at night and early morning there is barely one. The land has to warm up.

Can I plan a trip around a breeze?

At classic breeze destinations, yes — it is more reliable than synoptic wind. But an overcast week can shut it down almost entirely.

Does breeze work in autumn and winter?

More weakly: a lower sun heats the land less. On the other hand that is often when monsoon or synoptic wind takes over, as in Mui Ne from November to April.

How do I know whether there will be a breeze today?

Look at the sky in the morning. Clear and already warm — almost certainly yes. Solid overcast — probably not.
