Ocean & Earth Big Wave Pin Release One-XT - 15ft Leash

A leash is the only thing connecting you to your board after a wipeout. Its length is a safety question, not a comfort one: too short and the board snaps back at your head coming out of a wave; too long and it gets a run-up before it reaches you. The rule is simple — match the leash to your board length or go slightly longer.

A big-wave leash does two contradictory jobs. It has to survive loads that snap an ordinary cord — hence the thickness and the 15 ft length: a board in big surf gets carried a long way, and a short leash simply tears off.

The second job is to let you go when holding on becomes more dangerous than losing the board. That's the pin release: pull the cord and the leash detaches. In a set that won't let you surface it's the only way out, and it can't be found by feel — the mechanism has to be practised beforehand.

Who it isn't for. Overkill in normal surf: thick, heavy and draggy. And match length to board — fifteen feet makes sense on a gun and turns into rope underfoot on a shortboard.
