Kite spots of Crimea: where the wind works and what each place is like

Crimea has mountains, and mountains make wind turbulent — which is why the good kite spots are not where the famous resorts are. They are on the west and the east of the peninsula, where the land is flat and the lagoons are shallow.

We run our summer station in Mezhvodnoye, so this list is written from riding these places rather than from a map.

Donuzlav — the lagoon that made Crimea a kite destination

A large lagoon, up to about 1.3 m deep, with a sandy bottom. That combination is the reason it is the most popular kite area on the peninsula: flat water, standing depth, and enough space that a beginner and a freestyler do not get in each other's way.

If you are learning, this is where you want to be.

Mezhvodnoye and Belyaus — the most comfortable riding

The village of Mezhvodnoye sits on one of the best stretches of the west coast: shallow entry, steady wind, and infrastructure that exists without being a resort. Belyaus is the spit nearby, with the lagoon on one side and the open sea on the other — flat water and waves within a few hundred metres of each other.

This is where our Crimean school works, and the reason is not sentiment: the ratio of workable days to travel time is the best on the peninsula.

Olenevka and Popovka–Mirny — workable, less convenient

Both ride, both have wind, and both are less comfortable than the above — more exposed, less shelter, and a longer walk to anything. Fine for an experienced rider, unnecessary for a beginner who has a choice.

Shchelkino and Mysovoye — the east

The eastern coast near Shchelkino and Mysovoye is the least convenient of the working spots, but it is still a working spot: the Sea of Azov side is shallow and the wind statistics are decent. Worth knowing if you are already in the east of the peninsula.

Why not Yalta, Alushta, Feodosia or Sevastopol

Because the wind there is unreliable and the water is deep right off the beach. The south coast has strong, gusty, broken wind coming off the mountains and short steep waves, and almost no proper sandy beaches — which means nowhere safe to pump up and launch a kite.

Experienced riders go there occasionally. For anyone else it is genuinely dangerous rather than merely awkward, and no school will teach you on that coast.

Season

Summer, roughly May to September, with the most reliable wind in the middle of it. That is the mirror image of Vietnam: when Mui Ne goes quiet in the summer rains, Crimea is working, which is why our school runs on both.
