Leash, Pump and Bag: The Small Things a Session Fails Without

Leash, Pump and Bag: The Small Things a Session Fails Without

Board and paddle are the obvious purchases. Here are three items that seem optional until you are on the water without them.

The leash: the one item that saves lives

Starting with the important one, because it is safety equipment rather than an accessory.

Why a leash is mandatory: a board you lose blows downwind faster than you swim. That is not an exaggeration — an inflatable in wind moves at a speed even a strong swimmer cannot match.

And the other side: the board is your flotation. Tired, cramping, wind picking up — you hold the board and wait. Without a leash you do not have that option.

Three types and when each applies

Straight — 49 €. No spring, trails in the water. For waves: in surf a coiled leash is dangerous — the board snaps back at you.

Coil — 49 €. Sits on the deck, does not snag. For flat water and paddling: no drag, nothing underfoot.

Semi-Coil — 54 €. The compromise, a versatile choice.

YULEX Lightweight — 18 €. The brand's cheapest item, plant-based rubber instead of neoprene.

Where a leash is dangerous — important

A rule worth knowing before you need it.

In rivers and current a leash can kill you. If the board snags on a branch or a pillar, the current pins you, and unclipping a loaded leash is nearly impossible.

For moving water there are waist leashes with quick release — worn on a belt rather than the ankle, and released with one pull.

The rule is simple: still water, ankle leash. Current, a quick-release waist leash only — or, without one, no session.

With children: on open water without current a leash is needed. In current, see above.

The pump: why double-action

Double Action Tiki Pump — 49 €.

What "double action" means: the pump moves air on both the down and the up stroke. A standard pump only on the down stroke.

The practical difference: half the strokes for the same 15 psi. Inflating a SUP takes hundreds of strokes, and halving them saves noticeable effort.

A detail nobody mentions: good pumps switch modes. Start in double action — light and quick. Near working pressure, switch to single action — handle force drops and the last 3 to 4 psi come without straining.

Why that matters: those last few psi decide whether the board behaves like a board or like a lilo. We covered it in our construction comparison: under-inflation is the main source of disappointment with inflatable SUP.

On electric pumps: convenient if a car is nearby. Carry the hand pump anyway, as a fallback when the battery dies.

Bags: not about looks

SUP 3-Piece Paddle Soft Bag — 59 €.

SUP Double Paddle Soft Bag — 99 €, for two paddles.

Why a paddle needs a bag. A 219 € carbon paddle breaks in the boot rather than on the water: under a board, a bag and somebody's bicycle. Chip the blade edge and the paddle starts "whistling" through the water.

Simple economics: a 59 € bag protects a 219 € paddle. For a 79 € fibreglass paddle it is debatable; for carbon it is not.

On salt: putting a paddle away wet and salty is the worst thing you can do. Rinse in fresh water and dry, or salt acts as an abrasive in the section joints.

What else belongs on the essentials list

A vest — 90 €. Mandatory on children, strongly advised on open water.

A repair kit. Usually supplied with an inflatable. Check it is present and the glue has not dried — before the first puncture, not after.

A gauge. Often built into the pump. If not, buy one: inflating by feel is pointless.

A wetsuit for the season. Choosing one is in our separate article.

Building a kit in under a minute

Minimum for flat water: coil leash 49 € + pump 49 €.

Add waves: a straight leash instead of the coil.

Add children: a vest each.

Add a carbon paddle: a bag at 59 €.

Add travel: a double paddle bag at 99 €.

Common questions

Is a leash mandatory?

Yes. A lost board blows away faster than you swim, and the board is also your flotation if something goes wrong.

Which leash for waves?

Straight. A coil is dangerous in surf: the board snaps back at you.

When is a leash dangerous?

In current: if the board snags, unclipping under load is nearly impossible. There you need a quick-release waist leash.

Why a double-action pump?

It moves air both ways — half the strokes. And switching to single action helps you reach the final pressure.

Do I need a paddle bag?

For carbon, yes: it breaks in the boot rather than on the water. For fibreglass it is debatable.
