EPS, FSP, WOOD 2X: What Foil and Surf Boards Are Made Of

The same Lemon board costs 549 €, 699 €, 799 € or 949 € depending on a letter code. Here is what sits behind them.

What a board is made of

Any hard board is a sandwich of three layers:

  1. The blank. Light foam that sets volume and shape.
  2. The laminate. Cloth impregnated with resin: glass, carbon, flax, wood.
  3. The finish. Lacquer or paint.

All the difference between constructions lies in the second layer. The blank is usually the same.

What the codes mean

EPS

Expanded PolyStyrene — the familiar light white foam.

Pros: very light, cheap, holds shape well.

The drawback worth knowing: EPS absorbs water if punctured. Not a drop — a board can take on kilograms through an invisible crack. Hence the rule: any ding on an EPS board gets sealed immediately, not "at the end of the season".

Price: the Surf Foil Board Lance EPS at 459 €.

EPS Pro

The same blank with better laminate and finishing.

Price: the Lemon, Lethal, Matata, Scura and NOTW surf foil boards in EPS Pro at 549 €.

FSP 2X

A tougher laminate with double reinforcement.

What it gives: the board takes impacts and the load from foil inserts. In foiling that is critical: the mast transmits forces into the hull that surfing never generates.

Price: the Wing Foil Board Lemon FSP 2X at 799 €.

FSP Pro

The top step: minimum weight at maximum stiffness.

Price: the Lemon FSP Pro at 949 €.

WOOD 2X

A laminate with a wood layer.

What wood gives: it damps vibration and produces a different character — the board feels livelier and softer in chop. Wood is, however, heavier than carbon.

Price: the Wing Foil Board Lance WOOD 2X at 699 €, below the FSP 2X of the same model.

Conclusion: WOOD is neither worse nor better but a different compromise: more weight, better behaviour on rough water.

HDC and HDCC

Found on pump boards: the Kluber HDC Fiberglass at 359 € against the Kluber V2 HDCC at 399 €.

The extra C is carbon in the laminate. In pumping, stiffness converts directly into distance, so the premium is better justified here than anywhere: why, in our pump foil guide.

The price ladder on one model

Take the Lemon and look at the whole spread:

  • EPS Pro — 549 €
  • FSP Pro (surf foil) — 699 €
  • FSP 2X (wing foil) — 799 €
  • FSP Pro (wing foil) — 949 €

A 400 € spread, or 73 % of the base price. The same picture as kite suffixes in our suffix guide.

When a construction premium repays

It repays:

  • In pumping. Stiffness converts directly into distance.
  • At high hours. A tougher laminate lasts longer.
  • If you travel with the board. Half of all damage happens in boots and airports rather than on water.
  • On small boards. There every kilogram is half the board's weight.

It does not repay:

  • On a first board. It is almost always temporary — covered in our foil range article.
  • On large learner boards. There volume matters more than weight.
  • At rare sessions. Wear will not accumulate.

What kills a board faster than construction saves it

The most useful part of this article, because it applies at any price.

Sun. A board left deck-up on a beach heats until the foam inside expands and the laminate does not. Hence delamination bubbles. Lay it deck-down or in shade.

Heat in a car. The same mechanism, but harsher: a summer boot runs hotter than a beach.

Unsealed dings. On EPS that is a direct path to water ingress and delamination.

Over-tightened inserts. Over-torqued mast bolts crush the laminate around the insert. Tighten to snug, not to the stop.

Simple arithmetic: a 549 € board treated carefully will outlive a 949 € one left in the sun.

Common questions

What does EPS mean in a board name?

Expanded polystyrene — the blank material. Light, but it absorbs water through punctures.

How does FSP Pro differ from FSP 2X?

FSP Pro is lighter and stiffer; FSP 2X is tougher on impact. Around 150 € apart.

Is wood better than carbon?

Not better, different: wood damps vibration and softens chop but weighs more.

When is a construction premium worth paying?

In pumping, at high hours, if you travel with the board, and on small boards.

What harms a board most?

Sun and heat in a car: the foam expands while the laminate does not, producing bubbles. And unsealed dings.
