How to Read a Wind Forecast for Kitesurfing: Windguru and Windy

Why you need to read a forecast, not just look for the green square

Every morning in Mui Ne I see the same scene: a beginner opens Windguru, spots a bigger number and runs off to rig a kite. An hour later they're standing on the beach with wet gear asking "so where's the wind?". A forecast isn't a single number — it's a set of parameters that together tell you whether today is a real session or a waste of time.

We cover this in the very first theory lesson of the kitesurfing course, because without reading a forecast you either miss the windows or get into the water when riding is genuinely hard or unsafe.

Knots, not km/h: working out your range

Every serious watersports service shows wind speed in knots (kt) — the international maritime standard. One knot is about 1.85 km/h, so don't be alarmed if there's a unit switch and the numbers jump by a factor of 1.8.

At the same time, look at the gusts. If the average is 16 knots and gusts hit 24, that 8-knot difference feels like being jerked around: the kite pulls smoothly, then suddenly yanks upward. That's called gusty wind — rideable, but uncomfortable, especially for a beginner. The ideal is a gap of only 3–5 knots between average and gusts: steady, predictable wind. For learning, that's gold.

How Windguru works: the rows that matter

Windguru is the most popular service among kiters precisely because it gives you a table rather than a picture. The key rows:

The difference between models matters. GFS is NOAA's global model, computed worldwide on a coarse grid and updated every six hours — available almost anywhere, but exactly because of that coarse grid it's rougher in coastal zones. ECMWF (the European model) and local models are more accurate for a specific region, but aren't always free and update less often.

A simple rule: if GFS and ECMWF (or a local model) agree on direction and are close on speed for a given day, trust the forecast more. If they diverge by 5–7 knots, treat the day as uncertain and check again in the morning.

Beyond speed and direction, look at the tide (at some spots it completely changes the session), the swell if you're riding waves, and rain — a squall often brings a sharp change in wind strength and direction.

How much wind do you need to kitesurf?

From about 12 knots you can ride on a large kite, but you're at the limit. From 15 knots is comfortable for most riders, and 15–22 knots is the working range that covers the majority of sessions. Above 25 knots you need experience and a smaller kite.

What are gusts and why do they matter?

Gusts are peak wind values above the average. If the average is 16 knots and gusts reach 24, the kite alternates between smooth pull and sharp yanks. A gap of 3–5 knots between average and gusts means steady, pleasant wind; 8 knots or more means a gusty, tiring day.

Which is better, Windguru or Windy?

They complement each other. Windguru gives a precise hourly table with model names — better for planning a session. Windy gives a visual map and is handy for understanding the overall weather picture and how the wind field moves. Serious riders check both.

GFS or ECMWF — which model should I trust?

ECMWF and local models are generally more accurate for a specific coastline; GFS is coarser but available everywhere. The practical approach: if both agree, confidence is high. If they disagree by 5–7 knots, treat the day as uncertain.

Why is offshore wind dangerous?

Because it blows from the beach out to sea. If your kite drops or your gear fails, you drift away from shore rather than towards it. Reputable schools don't teach in offshore conditions.

How far ahead can you trust a wind forecast?

One to two days is reasonably reliable; three to five days shows the trend; beyond a week it's more a general pattern than a plan. For a kite trip, book by season statistics rather than a long-range forecast.
