
Most weather problems in kiting are solved by a smaller kite. A thunderstorm is not one of them. It is the single situation where the correct answer is simply: you should not be on the water.
What is dangerous besides lightning
Lightning is the obvious threat and not the main one. The main one is the gust front ahead of the storm.
A storm cloud works like a pump: a powerful updraught inside, and cold air descending at the edges and spreading across the surface. That spreading cold air is the gust front.
What it does to the wind:
- Speed doubles or triples within minutes. Twelve knots becomes thirty-five.
- Direction shifts abruptly, sometimes to the opposite.
- Gusts turn ragged — the kite drops, then yanks.
A kite sized for twelve knots is unmanageable in thirty-five. It is the gust front, not the lightning, that causes most serious storm incidents.
Reading it early: four signs
One: vertical development. Ordinary cloud is flat. Storm cloud grows upward as a tower with sharp edges and spreads into an anvil on top. If you can see an anvil, the storm is already formed.
Two: a dark flat base. An even dark grey or bluish band on the horizon, often with a ragged roll ahead of it. That roll is the gust front.
Three: the wind drops. Counterintuitive, but the lull before a storm is a real physical effect: air is being drawn into the cloud. A sudden calm under a growing cloud is not a cancelled session — it is a final warning.
Four: a sharp drop in temperature. A gust of cool air in hot weather means the downdraught has already reached you. Minutes separate that from the front.
The thirty-second rule
The classic distance estimate: count the seconds between flash and thunder and divide by three for kilometres.
Thirty seconds is ten kilometres. That is the distance at which you should already be on the beach, not starting to come in.
Why so far: a storm front moves at 30 to 60 km/h and covers ten kilometres in ten to twenty minutes. Landing the kite, walking in and packing takes about that.
And separately: lightning strikes several kilometres to the side of the cloud itself. "The storm is still far away" is a poor guide.
What to do when a storm approaches
- Come in immediately, without finishing the tack. This is the one point that actually decides things.
- Pack the kite completely. Do not leave it on the beach just in case — the gust front will take it.
- Put the bar and lines away. Wet lines conduct.
- Get away from the water and from open ground. The beach is the worst place: you are the tallest object on it.
- Do not shelter under a lone tree. A car or a solid building, yes; a tree or an awning, no.
If the gust front catches you on the water
A bad situation, but not a hopeless one. In this order.
Dump power before it arrives. Push the bar out fully and hold the kite at zenith. Do not try to ride it out on the increase.
Head in by the shortest route, not the convenient one. Landing somewhere awkward beats a tidy landing ten minutes later.
Do not hesitate to release. The safety system exists for exactly this. A kite costs money, and money is all you lose.
If the kite is unmanageable, release fully and swim. Self-rescue matters more than anything else here, and it has to be practised in advance.
On forecasts
Storms forecast poorly: they are smaller than the model grid cell. A forecast gives you probability, not time or place.
What works better: live precipitation radar and your own eyes. Radar shows the cell and the direction it is travelling — enough to tell whether it is coming at you or past you.
And the seasonal rule: in hot weather storms build in the afternoon. Morning sessions in storm season are safer not because the wind is better but because the cloud has not grown yet.

How close is already dangerous?
Ten kilometres is the distance at which you should be ashore. Lightning strikes to the side of the cloud, so "still far away" does not hold.
Why does the wind drop before a storm?
Air is drawn into the cloud by the updraught. A lull under a growing cloud is a warning, not an improvement.
Can I wait a storm out on the beach?
No. Open beach is the worst place: you are the tallest object. A car or a building, yes.
What if the kite is being torn out of my hands on land?
Let go. A kite costs money, but nobody chases one into a gust front.
Do forecasts predict storms?
Partly. Models see probability but not the individual cell. Live precipitation radar is more useful.
