Description
A 1.5 mm neoprene vest is the most underrated thing in the cupboard. It doesn't replace a suit, it extends the season: you can still surf in boardshorts when lycra alone has become too cold. The core stays warm, the arms stay free.
1.5 mm is a considered choice: thick enough to feel it, thin enough not to fight your paddling. Any more and the shoulders start to tire.
Who it isn't for. Not the answer for cold water — that needs a full suit. It doesn't always go under a wetsuit either; the suit can end up too tight. And in the tropics it's simply hot.
