Description
A disproportionate amount of heat leaves through your head, so in cool water a hood often buys more than an extra millimetre on the suit. It has a cost, though: it muffles sound and narrows your side vision.
The name is literal: the design preserves hearing. An ordinary hood presses on the ear and muffles everything, and in the water hearing is a safety matter rather than a comfort one.
Who it isn't for. Pointless in the tropics. If your suit has an integrated hood, a second one is redundant. And get used to it at a familiar break: narrowed vision and muffled sound are disorienting the first time.
