A leash is the only thing connecting you to your board after a wipeout. Its length is a safety question, not a comfort one: too short and the board snaps back at your head coming out of a wave; too long and it gets a run-up before it reaches you. The rule is simple — match the leash to your board length or go slightly longer.

A safety cord tying the paddle to the craft. Same job as a leash with a different object: a paddle lost in surf is essentially unfindable, and without it you're not going anywhere.

It earns its place in shorebreak and wind — where a capsize happens on its own and the current takes things faster than you resurface.

Who it isn't for. On moving water a tethered paddle can snag and become the hazard rather than the safeguard. And plenty of SUP surfers deliberately go without one in waves — judge it by your spot.
