This is the cheapest entry into windsurfing that exists — if you already own a SUP. Here is how it works and where the format ends.
What you need
A board with a mast socket. Starboard has a dedicated branch: SUPWindsurfing Inflatable from
789 €, iGO SUPWindsurfing 899 €, Whopper SUPWindsurfing 839 €, Touring SUPWindsurfing 939 €.A sail package:
- Sail Classic —
Why it works better than it sounds
The scepticism is fair: a SUP board is wide, heavy and not about speed. But those very properties make it an excellent learning platform.
A width of 32 to 36 inches exceeds most learner windsurf boards. Stability at the start decides everything, and lifting a sail out of the water on a wide board is incomparably easier.
Volume to spare. A SUP board is designed for you standing still on it. A windsurf board is designed for you sailing. The first is exactly what the early hours require.
The practical upshot: for first steps a SUP with a sail is honestly better than a cheap dedicated board. The difference appears later, at planing.
Where the format ends
Plainly, to avoid disappointment.
You will not plane. A SUP board is too heavy with too much wetted surface. Speed stays at cruising pace.
Above 15 knots it gets uncomfortable. A wide board starts slamming into chop.
Socket position is a compromise. It sits where it does not interfere with paddling, not where it is optimal for a sail.
In sum: a discipline for light to medium wind, flat water and relaxed sailing. Which, honestly, describes most days on a lake.
Classic versus Compact
A
134 € gap, and it is about transport.Classic — a conventional mast, cheaper, longer when packed.
Compact — a mast that splits into more sections, shorter in the bag.
Simple logic: if your board is inflatable and you chose it for packability, Compact keeps that logic intact. Pairing a conventional mast with an inflatable board throws away the main advantage.
On "without mast base": the
469 € option is 46 € below the full package and suits you if you already have a base or it came with the board. Confirm the contents before buying — we check that before payment.Who it suits
Anyone who already has a SUP with a socket. Entry costs the price of a sail.
Families. One board, two activities: paddling and sailing.
Anyone on a lake or bay with light wind. The format works at full strength there.
Anyone wanting to try windsurfing without buying a setup. The budget difference is severalfold.
Children. The SUPKids SUPWindsurfing at
789 € is a board with a clear learning path.Who it does not suit
Anyone wanting speed. Buy a windsurf board: we have a range guide.
Anyone whose wind is consistently above 15 knots.
Anyone whose SUP has no socket. You cannot fit one yourself — it is structural.
What to check before buying
Whether your board has a socket. It looks like a round plate towards the nose. Without one the board will not work, and there is no fix.
Mast base compatibility. Diameters and fitting types vary between brands.
Sail size. For SUP go small: 4 to 5 m² for an adult, 2 to 3 m² for a child. A big sail simply capsizes a wide board.
Board pressure. Under a sail hull loads exceed those of paddling — inflate to maximum. Why that matters is covered in our construction comparison.
Common questions
Can I fit a sail to any SUP board?
No, you need a mast socket. It is structural and cannot be added later.
Will a SUP with a sail plane?
No. The board is heavy with a lot of wetted surface — speed stays at cruising pace.
What sail size should I buy?
4 to 5 m² for an adult, 2 to 3 m² for a child. A big sail capsizes a wide board.
Classic or Compact?
Compact if your board is inflatable and you value packability. Classic is cheaper but longer in the bag.
Up to what wind is it comfortable?
Around 15 knots. Above that a wide board starts slamming into chop.
