The fin is the most underrated part. It is out of sight and inexpensive, yet it decides whether the board tracks or wanders. Here is how it works.
What the number means
The catalogue carries names like Natural Winner SUP Fin 181, Race Ultra 212, Purify 290, Dol-Fin 22 SUP Fin 220.
The number is fin length in millimetres. 181 is eighteen centimetres, 290 is twenty-nine.
Simple logic:
- Longer tracks better, turns worse, sits deeper.
- Shorter turns easier, tracks worse, works in shallows.
A direct practical conclusion: if your board wanders and you keep correcting, you want a longer fin. If it will not turn, a shorter one.
Three materials, three prices
Net Positive — from
19 €. Recycled materials, base stiffness. The brand's environmental line, and cheaper than standard.Armacore — from
59 €. The middle tier, stiffer.Prepreg Carbon — from
100 €. Maximum stiffness. What you pay for. A stiff fin does not bend under side load, so it holds a line more precisely and does not "swim" at speed.
When you notice: at speed and over distance. On a cruise the gap between a
19 € fin and a 150 € one will not reveal itself.How many fins
The catalogue lists Center Fin and Side Fins Set.
A single centre fin — the classic for paddling and touring. Less drag, better straight-line glide.
Three fins (a thruster) — a centre plus two sides. The surf layout: more hold through a turn, better in waves.
The practical choice: cruising and distance take one centre fin. Waves take a thruster.
Note: many boards have slots for both, and the sides come off. Try both before buying new ones.
Special shapes
The Weed (169) —
93 €. Heavily raked back so weed slides off. If your spot gets overgrown that is a necessity rather than a luxury: a normal fin collects weed and stops you every hundred metres.Dol-Fin 22 (220) —
41 € in the base version. A shape biased towards stability.Shallow Fin (FRN 220, 310, 410) — windsurf fins for shallow water.
Race Ultra (212) —
103 €, for racing.Windsurf fins are their own story
Here length decides even more than in SUP.
Freewave —
165 €, waves and freeride.Ready to Freestyle —
108 €.Freeride Power —
177 €.R2R Slalom and Race — from
207 €, carbon. The key windsurf rule: the fin is matched to the sail rather than the board. Bigger sail, longer fin, or the board spins out.
G10 in the names is glass laminate, the windsurf fin standard: stiff and durable.
When to replace a stock fin
An honest list, because usually you should not.
Replace if:
- The board wanders and you correct constantly → longer.
- Your spot grows weed → The Weed.
- Shallow water and the fin touches bottom → shorter or Shallow.
- The fin is broken or cracked — no alternatives there.
- You changed discipline, cruising to waves → a thruster.
Do not replace if: someone told you carbon is better. At cruising speed it is not.
What to check before buying
Fitting type. US Box, Slide-in, Tuttle — not interchangeable. The first thing to learn about your board.
Brand compatibility. Base shapes differ, and another brand's fin may not seat.
Screw and plate included. Sometimes supplied separately.
If in doubt, send us your board model and we will check compatibility before payment.
Common questions
What do 181 and 290 mean?
Fin length in millimetres. Longer tracks better; shorter turns easier.
Do I need a carbon fin?
At cruising speed you will not feel the difference. It earns its place at speed and over distance.
One fin or three?
One centre fin for paddling and distance, a thruster for waves. Many boards accept both.
What is The Weed fin for?
It is raked back so weed slides off. At an overgrown spot a normal fin slows you constantly.
Will a fin from another board fit?
Only with a matching fitting type: US Box, Slide-in and Tuttle are not interchangeable. Write to us and we will check.
